Applied formal logic (including higher-order and modal logics) in creating artificial intelligence software for use in multiple settings, including web search enhancement, network security, and battlefield monitoring.In particular, developed large conceptual systems and analyzed common chains of reasoning (looking in particular for underlying assumptions) to create computer software that can query a large knowledge base and mimic human reasoning about it. Applications of the software included: reasoning about military and political issues in the Middle East; software tools to aid analysts in searching for intrusions into large computer networks; another tool that collects field reports about battlefield conditions and assists field commanders in interpreting and detecting patterns in these reports; and the representation of possible terrorist scenarios for use in automated reasoning to help United States intelligence efforts.Improved the clarity of the technical documentation at Cycorp resulting in more productive use of the technology and a better public image for the company.
