I am a transport and safety specialist with consultancy ViaStrada Ltd in Christchurch, having joined in Apr 2016. Prior to that I spent 12 years as a lecturer at Canterbury University, and previously 10 years as a consulting traffic/transportation engineer and researcher with Opus.I have a particular interest in the areas of road safety and sustainable transport, including speed management and planning & design for cycling. My wide-ranging research and consulting experience also includes work on sustainable transportation policies, planning & design for walking, crash data analysis, future transport technologies, road/traffic legislation, traffic calming, safety auditing, road network reliability, and the design and operation of two-lane rural highways and passing lanes. Much of this work has been presented in >120 books, journals, conference papers, reports and other publications.At Canterbury Uni, I taught undergraduate and postgraduate classes in a wide range of traffic engineering and transportation planning topics (average 5-6 courses/year). I also developed and led undergraduate courses in project design and professional engineering skills, and also taught oral and written presentation skills to students. I have supervised over 70 students undertaking PhD, Masters, or BE(Hons) research projects in a variety of transportation topics. I continue to provide guest lecturing and student advice to Canterbury and other universities.I regularly contribute to industry groups and activities, including Transportation Group NZ committees, the RCAs Forum Active Modes Infrastructure Group, Trafinz, the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and a number of conference organising committees. I am a passionate public advocate for best-practice transport and urban planning solutions.
