About Glen Lambert

I am a professional Software Development Manager with a long history of leading successful engineering teams. I have an excellent understanding of how to recruit, manage, motivate and measure teams of developers, lead on projects large & small, tailor processes and practises to fit the needs of an organisation and work just as effectively with departments outside IT.I began programming when I was a child and went on to build a varied career in technology, including more than 20 years of hands-on commercial Web and Software Development experience, 2 years designing and delivering technical training courses, 3 years working as a Big Data technology consultant.I believe the breadth of experience I have gained, working in multiple different sectors for small start-ups and large corporations, has given me the perfect foundation and underpinned the success I have enjoyed as a Technical Lead and as a People Manager. In my spare time, I am active in my local community and an elected Town Councillor for Henley-on-Thames. I was also elected Mayor of Henley for the Civic Year 2018/19 during which time I organised a number of events and raised thousands of pounds for local charities. In 2019 I founded Bluebells Day Centre, a registered charity providing respite care for local people living with Dementia. I’m very proud of this achievement and still sit on the board of trustees.Since 2017 I have been working with the organisers of HorrorConUK, the first ever dedicated UK Horror convention, based in Sheffield. They approached me after being dissatisfied with three different ticketing providers in as many years to ask if I could provide a bespoke solution for them. I built them a Stripe-integrated web shop using a LAMP stack and an Android App, built in Java, for them to scan tickets and resolve customer queries on the door. They have been using the system I built ever since, and from next year, also plan to use it for their sister event, Popcorn.

  • Horrorcon Uk Ltd
    Product Engineering Manager
Horrorcon Uk Ltd May 2023 - Present
    Sheffield, England, United Kingdom
HorrorConUK Ltd is an Event Organiser of film and television conventions, attended by thousands of people every year, that uses a bespoke eCommerce and ticketing system. I have led the project to redevelop the system from an outdated PHP5 monolith designed for just one event, into a modern, scalable platform, built with CodeIgniter 4 & Java, that can support an unlimited number of events as they continue to expand their business with additional conventions. This project also included the replacement of their ticket scanning app, which was little more than a bleeper, with a full-featured Android App, written in Java, capable of operating with or without an Internet connection, that provides full data on ticket scans and allows staff to resolve basic customer service inquiries, such as finding lost tickets, on the door. I am now leading the project to productise the system so it can be licensed for use by another events company.

Henley Town Council May 2018 - May 2019
    Henley
I was elected Mayor of Henley-on-Thames for the Civic Year 2018/19 and, in my opening speech, committed to bringing back the Bluebells Day Centre which had recently been closed down, along with many other Day Centres, by AgeUK after funding cuts. It took several months but I was able to bring back the original staff, partner with two other local charities, secure thousands of pounds worth of grants, raise thousands more through my own fundraising events and register Bluebells Day Centre as an independent local charity. Bluebells Day Centre began serving local people with living with Dementia again on April 25th, 2019 and has recently celebrated it’s 5 year anniversary. In support of Bluebells Day Centre, Henley Music School and special educational needs at Gillotts Secondary School, I organised a fundraising concert at Henley’s Kenton Theatre from world-renowned double bass virtuoso Leon Bosch. I also organised a black-tie dinner for more than a hundred guests in Henley Town Hall, raising thousands more for the charities. The special Remembrance Service, marking of 100 years since the end of World War One, also happened during my year as Mayor. To mark the occasion, I personally organised a flypast over Henley of WW1 aircraft, which was funded with the help of local donors, and provided the well over a thousand spectators gathered with a unique glimpse into the past.I worked incredibly hard for my year as Mayor, attending an average of more than 1 related meeting or event every day. It was a very challenging but very rewarding year.

  • Castle Trust Bank
    Software Development Manager
Castle Trust Bank Oct 2015 - Apr 2019

Castle Trust is a fast-paced Financial Services company providing investment bonds and mortgages to businesses and private landlords. I led a team of six developers through a period of rapid transition which included migrating several complex legacy applications to modern application frameworks and unifying & normalising databases.I alleviated a fractious relationship between the Development Team and the rest of the business by implementing Agile/Kanban processes that fit the needs of the business; I maintained PSR-2 coding standards, enforced code reviews, unit testing, continuous delivery, hired new developers and assisted directly on several business critical integrations with Experian, Equifax & Phoebus. The technologies used at Castle Trust were Linux, PHP5 & 7, Laravel, AngularJS and VueJS with Phinx used for Database Migrations and GIT for source control. Unit tests were performed on the back and front-end as part of the deployment process.

  • Oracle
    Manager, Managed Services
    Oracle Dec 2011 - Jul 2013
    Reading, United Kingdom
In 2010, after Oracle's acquisition of RightNow, I was promoted to Manager of the Managed Services team, which was responsible for new implementations of RightNow, small (under 200 hours) projects, on-going maintenance for existing customers and the continued development & delivery of the Technical Training courses I developed. I was responsible for recruitment, mentoring, annual appraisals, and although I was largely hands-off by this point, I did act as a tech lead and would step in and help code customisations to RightNow if deadlines were tight. At the time of the acquisition by Oracle, the Managed Services team consisted of two Web Developers, a Project Manager, two Senior Consultants and three Junior Consultants. Aside from the technical knowledge I brought to the team, I was an effective communicator and problem solver who was able to bridge the gap between the technical staff and the wider business and also repair and maintain positive relationships with difficult external customers.

    Hornbill Service Management 2003 - 2005
Hornbill's SupportWorks application was built in C++, PHP and Javascript and my role at Hornbill allowed to get my hands dirty with all three. The bulk of my time was spent on creating & maintaining the various PHP & JavaScript components of the product, most specifically around reporting analytics. I worked on custom reports for Hornbill's customers, product customisations & also a custom report creation tool that allowed customers to build their own reports & charts.I also enjoyed spending time working on pre-sales & sales support, producing demonstration sites & custom code for sales presentations. For 3 months of my time at Hornbill, I worked directly on the C++ application itself which I really enjoyed as it was my first, and so far last, commercial exposure to C++ development work.
  • Fish4
    Web Developer - Team Lead
    Fish4 2002 - 2003
    London, United Kingdom
Eventually promoted to lead the front end development team at RightNow and worked extensively with one of my colleagues on Fish4's site for TV set top boxes which, back then, meant working within a very restrictive framework and required considerable planning to achieve the rich design Fish4 wanted. We did succeed. It looked excellent for the time.
  • Fish4
    Web Developer
    Fish4 2000 - 2002
    London, United Kingdom
Was hired after spending a day creating complex HTML layouts to prove I could do the job.Strictly front end, my work at Fish4 was limited to HTML & JavaScript but I was able to make significant improvements to the Fish4 site, developing a cross-browser compliant method for retrieving advertisements after page load and dropping them in dynamically which, at the time, was not straightforward given the browser technology at the time. This, together with other efficiency suggestions I made at the time, kicked off an efficiency drive at Fish4 which aimed to decrease page weight and improved site performance. Some of the code I wrote for this project remained in use on the Fish4 site for years after I had moved on.
