I am a natural born problem solver. I see connections where others don't, so a job where linear thinking is a must is not for me. But if you want to build a product that works and that customers find intuitive and easy to use, then sign me up. When I am challenged and engaged and allowed to explore creative solutions, my passion is engaged. My creative side is open to exploring multiple solutions; if you go with the first solution, there's a good chance you missed a better one. I am more risk tolerant than many of my peers in the corporate world. My experience as a social worker working with troubled teenagers taught me perspective. Products are important in the business world, but unlike people, you can test and learn in a safe environment of your making to mitigate the consequences so that when you are ready to share it with your customers, you have some confidence that it will work. But more importantly, that it can be brought back to the lab and improved over time as you learn from your customers. The most important thing I learned as a social worker was to listen with no preconceptions. An honest assessment of a need or problem is always more helpful than one designed exclusively to please. If done well, you can even do both. The best work environment for me is one where leadership understands that there are no meaningful gains without some risk. With years of experience in the insurance industry, I have learned a great deal about risk assessment and risk mitigation, so I can practice good risk management without foregoing the opportunity to test and learn...and then test and learn some more.
