My rank was of third engineer on a cape size bulk carrier with slow speed diesel propulsion.I performed maintenance duties on high pressure reciprocating air compressors, Alfa Laval purifiers/clarifiers, Osaka low pressure boiler and all associated equipment.I was the duty engineer every third day responsible for lube oil, fuel oil transfers and waste products complying with MARPOL requirements.

Working as ship's Engineer my time was spent in day to day maintenance of lube oil purifiers, screw air compressors, reciprocating piston air compressors, diesel generators and whatever other jobs were allocated to me within my experience, every third day was my gear turn when I was responsible for answering alarms and maintaining the exceptions log. All jobs were completed under a permit to work/lock out tag out system with a valid risk assessment in place.

Working 12 hour shifts, I was responsible for taking a watch alternatively between ship's systems such as propulsion, power generation, steering and associated systems; and dredging equipment such as centrifugal pumps, gear boxes and motors; answering alarms keeping a log and performing maintenance duties as required from weekly maintenance schedule. Regular duties included: answering alarms, maintaining the log, pumping of bilges, cleaning of fuel/lube strainer and fuel oil/lube oil purifiers.

During my time with Modec I served on two cape size dry cargo bulk carrier and one panama fpso as a Trainee Engineer. I learned about ships systems and ships safety system as prescribed in the International Marine organization's (IMO) International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Performed maintenance duties under instruction from the Chief Engineer. Duties included monitoring of temperatures and pressure of dredge equipment, maintenance of such equipment as and when required and maintenance of utilities such and sewage, lighting and plumbing.Implementation of safety, permit to work systems and procedures.Management and supervision of contractors

Throughout my apprenticeship as a fitter I worked as part of the maintenance team. I was thought the safe use of tools associated with production plant and equipment. I learned safety and lockout systems, attended technical institutes, understood processes and the safe maintenance of such process equipment.
