With nearly 30,000 SCAD alumni, I've seen firsthand how art and design can be taught and how we can prepare students for creative careers. Critical to that is designing inspiring facilities and environments that enhance the creative interaction between our faculty and students. I've been fortunate to be involved in doing that with all of our facilities on three different continents, and that includes designing everything from residence halls to fitness centers to meeting space. Our faculty, staff and students will continue to see even more evidence of this with new dorms, cafes and restaurants, and classrooms planned to open in the near future. Equally fulfilling for me has been the opportunity to help rescue some of the most endangered buildings in America and France, and being involved with our partners in Hong Kong in the first ever renovation of a historically significant building there. Our preservation and building design work has led to numerous preservation and architecture awards including AIA and National Trust for Preservation awards, (local, state and national) and in 2011 an international UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage. For students, this means they are attending a school that takes creativity and design seriously at every level. There is a team of gifted professionals at SCAD intent on creating the very best facilities to inspire learning and creativity while providing a sound, safe, and supportive environment. We attract the very best of the best of the design world in four different communities across the globe to make that happen. Daniel H. Pink is quoted as saying, “Harness the power of peers.” SCAD is the perfect environment for doing just that; we provide everything a student needs to collaborate with each other and craft their own unique and positive experience.
