He has over 50 years of experience in exploration and development of oil and gas wells. He started with cable tools while he was in High School in 1958. He expanded his knowledge and in 1972 was co-founder of Gear Drilling Company in Denver, Colorado. The company owned three drilling rigs, two doubles and one triple. These rigs ran in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska. Mr. Hoppes sold in 1991, and began working with other producers and drillers in Kansas, Texas, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
