Graduate research focused on developing GIS-based geospatial analyses/processes to improve the identification of wetlands using remotely sensed data sources. Additional research focused on creating a multi-metric bioassessment framework for isolated wetlands in southwest Georgia by combining field-based qualitative and quantitative assessments of vegetation, water chemistry, and disturbance at the wetland scale with quantitative assessments of current and historical disturbance at the landscape scale. Served as the teaching assistant for an undergraduate level Spatial Analysis (GIS/GPS) course where I focused on integrating ecological and technological concepts to facilitate the application of GIS/GPS in answering ecological/biological questions.

Investigated wildlife disease and associated impacts on domestic agriculture and human health. Designed and coordinated biological collections of mammals and avifauna in concert with local, state, and federal agencies, private landowners, and agricultural operators. Typical duties involved: trapping and collecting biological samples from feral swine to assess prevalence and risk of zoonotic disease transmission; mist netting and rocket netting multiple avian species and collecting biological samples to assess prevalence of H1N1 and other strains of avian influenza; radio tracking shorebirds in support of avian influenza ecology studies; live trapping small mammals and collecting ecto-parasites to assess transmission risk of exotic diseases via ecto-parasite vectors.

Conducted research related to sea turtle nesting activity, nesting success, and hatchling success on an isolated barrier island. Participated in predator control operations involving the trapping and culling of feral swine and raccoons.

Conducted stream outfall inventories and water chemistry sampling in support of NPDES for municipal clients. Additional duties included sediment and erosion control monitoring and the assessment of flood prone areas. Routinely collected, managed and analyzed GIS/GPS data related to such projects. Designed and implemented a multi-metric stream monitoring program assessing chemical, physical, and biological parameters to provide a framework for quantifying the success of stream restorations.

Investigated the impact of water fluctuations on fish population structure above and below Lake Blackshear on the Flint River, GA. Operated backpack and boat-mounted electro-shock units for the collection of fish. Identified fish to species. Collected data on the physical condition of fish, and the physical and chemical aspects of water quality.
