Developing Java-based solutions for the Defense industry.Really interesting environment: running Ubuntu Linux on the desktop. Using Git/Gitlab/Bitbucket for source control. Huge Java suite running under JBoss; Maven to build, Docker to test. Writing RESTful web services via JAX-RS; testing using Swagger. Using Apache Lucene for fast queries (being mindful of the multithreaded environment in which they run), and Apache Kafka to process specific streams of data. Using both Apache Accumulo and PostgreSQL for persistent storage.Passed CompTIA Security+ (SY0-501) 30 May 2018Passed CompTIA Linux+ (LX0-103,104)/LPIC-1 26 September 2019
  • Self-Study
    Student
    Self-Study Aug 2016 - Feb 2018
When I moved to San Diego, I was excited to have time at last for self-study to greatly expand upon my software development skills. My studies have included (but not been limited to):-- recent advances in multithreading and parallel programming in Java-- Groovy-- Python-- PHP-- Vue.js-- Git, Maven, Wildfly-- neural networks-- iOS and macOS development, using materials from the Big Nerd Ranch, Paul Hudson's "Hacking With Swift" series, and Bart Jacobs' CocoaCastsThe bottom line is: Each and every day, I am on the computer learning something new, whether from Lynda.com, Udemy.com, or other sources (as noted above), or trying ideas on my own.[And OF COURSE the self-study is ongoing, but it's no longer my only activity.]
  • Hp
    Senior Software Developer
    Hp Jul 2006 - Jul 2016
    Palo Alto, Ca, Us
Primarily developed and supported a secure web site providing special pricing data to partners, to customers, and to HP sales reps and support personnel worldwide. The application began as Perl CGIs using sockets and an Informix database, but progressed quickly to using Apache+Tomcat, Java/JSP, Oracle (including PL/SQL), and a host of other technologies, including Apache POI to support native import/export of MS Excel spreadsheets. Where appropriate, statistics were represented visually using Raphael and NVD3.Backend supporting processes were written primarily in ksh, Java, and Perl running on a Red Hat Linux VM in HP's cloud environment.I am always looking to improve upon my techniques and to make the code easier to understand. For example, I wrote two generic Oracle load/unload scripts in Perl to mimic the corresponding Informix dbaccess statements, which were a vast improvement over using Oracle's SQL*Loader.
