Unbeknownst when I started this endeavor, the Naval War College was to be my last assignment in the Navy. Fully expecting to explore options to be a professor, plans changed when my widowed mother was diagnosed with brain cancer halfway through the academic year. She ultimately succumbed after a yearlong battle. This tragedy inspired deep introspection, and changed the direction my life would take in the coming years.Despite the life challenges associated with these circumstances, I finished the masters program. I took the opportunity to study aspects of our rapidly changing world about which I had no previous knowledge or experience. I wrote a notable paper on Blockchain and Cryptocurrency, and I took electives that included the study of colonial, and post-colonial Africa to better understand how African nations will emerge in the 21st century. My final exam, written about the importance of honor among nations, was nominated for the College's highest academic writing award.

Directed a high-performing team that delivered full-spectrum executive support to a 2-star Admiral leading a Navy regional headquarters based in Naples, Italy responsible for $8.7 billion in assets, and 20,000 people working at seaports and airports leased to the United States in 7 countries on 3 different continents. Managed all aspects of communications to drive business development. Inspired our most powerful and influential customers to lobby Congress for funding on our behalf and erode by 60% a funding gap of $300M for critical maintenance and construction projects.Conceived, planned, and led a 12-month effort that improved the manner in which the Navy Region reported its successes by systematically refining the metrics used to measure objective achievement, focusing on the right media for communicating with our customers, and explaining mission impact from successes, challenges, and failures. What started as a 104-page document nobody read transformed into a 2-page, executive-level attention grabber that got directly to the "so what?" One of our most senior customers asked, "Where has this been and how do I get more of it?"Reviewed and edited all written and electronic communication drafts to adjust for voice, style, and content prior to the CEO's signature and release. Quickly turned the CEO's complex thoughts and ideas into concise, clear emails and communiques. Able to take just a few words of guidance and shape them into powerful, effective white papers, power point presentations, and more. Introduced a creative manner of laying out decision papers alongside accompanying graphics for decision briefs. The side-by-side presentation of graphics and supporting white papers reduced by 90% iterative questions from more senior leaders, and thus accelerated decision timelines.

Executive communications manager for a four-star admiral responsible for planning, preparing and conducting military operations throughout the Supreme Allied Commander Europe’s area of responsibility while concurrently serving as Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe and U.S. Naval Forces Africa. Autonomously proposed, researched, and authored more than 200 speeches, keynote addresses, multimedia presentations, social media posts, and press briefings, often under the constraint of tight deadlines, that aligned strategic messaging and international engagement. Consistently produced polished executive-level written products quickly and accurately using a collaborative 360° approach to every topic, requirement, and product to ensure proper nuance and delivery to multinational audiences, including Think Tanks, Industry Panels, Political Bodies, Allied/Partnered Military Leadership, and internal audiences such as All Hands Calls and Gala Events. Uss Nimitz (Cvn-68)

Created a morale lifting, policy shaping internal communications tool in the form of a daily cartoon that lampooned life at sea aboard one of the Navy's capital ships. The cartoon accompanied the principle aspect of this assignment, which was the creation of a daily plan that balanced competing requirements for 18 unique departments totaling 5,500 people, a master schedule for 65 aircraft executing high-tempo, hazardous operations, plus all the nuances associated with the safe operation of a floating airport sitting on top of a nuclear power plant. The cartoons, plus the daily plans, required well-managed, never-ending, interdepartmental collaboration and coordination to meet unified objectives, as well as a deep understanding of the issues, grumblings, and challenges experienced by the crew. Noted for the ability tackle tough topics with grace and wit, plus the ability to craft executable solutions, accurately communicate challenges and opportunities, and take input from key stakeholders. Success managing numerous competing requirements and prioritizing resources helped Nimitz earn the highest comprehensive nuclear plant and overall material condition audit (compared to the 10 other ships of the same class/size) in five years. Published a book of original artwork at the end of this assignment.

Directly supervised 30 civilian and military 24/7 rotational watch standers in the National Capitol responsible for producing daily/emergent terrorism analysis for the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. Streamlined and focused production of analysis to improve our customers’ experience by soliciting direct feedback on how the division was or was not meeting expectations. Introduced data archiving and metadata tagging to enable rapid retrieval of recent and historical analysis that reduced the amount of time required to answer short-fused requests for information from U.S. national strategic leadership from hours to minutes. Hand-picked to advise the executive vice president for the largest directorate in the Defense Intelligence Agency on career development for more than 60 military officers serving in the largely non-military, 1,000+-member workforce.
