Charged with acquiring and managing 15 to 18 new books per year for the U.S. Naval Institute (USNI), I reviewed manuscripts and solicited and commissioned new projects in coordination with the Director and other team members. I also assessed new projects for commercial marketability and considered reprint options for existing and older titles. For the projects that were accepted, I drew up contracts in coordination with the Director and other staff members, negotiating terms with the author and agents. Prior to production, I then edited and shaped the manuscripts and content before the production editors began work on the titles. I also liaised with potential USNI authors and built stronger relationships with the writers and experts from our existing network of contacts. I also arranged the peer review process for a large portion of the new manuscripts submitted to USNI.In addition to those duties, I maintained and delivered eBooks and other electronic versions of USNI titles via various online channels and vendors, as well as updated metadata for eBooks and other titles, and managed tracking tools for the eBook process, sometimes in coordination with the marketing department.

I supervised a team of 8 to 10 editors and translators in the production of English-language books on China's economy, history, and culture. Enrich Professional Publishing produced more than 50 titles per year at that time. I also served as copy editor on these titles. The majority of the books produced by Enrich Professional Publishing were academic in nature and produced in very close cooperation with educational institutions in Mainland China (Renmin University of China and Tsinghua University).I also edited new and existing titles to ensure that grammar and style standards were being met, and I developed, updated, and maintained an internal style guide to supplement our existing ones (Chicago and AP).I held a weekly editorial training and discussion session with staff, and I worked with local primary and secondary school students on a volunteer basis every week for nearly 2 years.During my time at Enrich Professional Publishing, I developed and immediately implemented a plan to bring translation efforts in-house and away from external service providers in Mainland China. This change led to significantly higher quality publications being produced by the company and more staff oversight of the products and process.In addition, I liaised with current and prospective authors and assisted with marketing efforts (web copy, marketing pieces, and book jacket and cover material).When I left Enrich Professional Publishing to return to the USA in the summer of 2014, I was researching possible authors for 2 proposed new projects: a book on China's property woes and a book on corporate governance/due diligence in China. Following our success with the 2 books shown below from Joe Zhang, these 2 proposals in 2014 were to be the first of many non-academic publishing efforts.

I was responsible for maintaining, on a daily basis, the editorial integrity of more than 15,000 nursing specialty certification examination items which were housed in a secure database. I also constructed, in collaboration with senior and junior team members, more than a dozen scored and unscored nursing specialty certification examinations per year. I facilitated or co-facilitated more than a dozen 3-day or 2-day meetings per year during which Subject Matter Experts (SME) edited and reviewed thousands of items in a group setting in order to produce the new nursing specialty certification examinations.I was the lead facilitator of multiple, 2-day quality assurance meetings with the Chairs of the SME panels each year, or during each examination's production cycle.As an editor, I also analyzed statistics, including each nursing specialty certification examination item's historical data, in preparation for each examination's score setting meeting during which the examination's scoring criteria would be determined.

I established the US electronic publishing ("ePub") department in Jane's US office through daily interaction/cross-training with the US application development and the UK electronic publishing teams. The US "ePub" department was originally a department of one -- just me -- for approximately 2 years.I expanded the US electronic publishing department's functions to include daily updating of Janes.com, Jane's free website, and continual business-day updating of Jane's Online, Jane's premium subscription website.I also delivered Jane's electronic data services on daily, weekly, and monthly schedules to more than 100 US customers and international markets through e-mail and FTP, including thousands of end-users in the US national security and intelligence communities. And I created a customized data solution for more than 60 customers on more than 300 CDs per month.All of the above activities involved managing the department's shared Microsoft Access database for all electronic product deliveries.

As the first Creative Content Developer at Jane's I shaped my job responsibilities beyond my original job description duties of identifying potential acquisition targets and editorial content sources for Jane's worldwide.In addition to editing newsletters and books in coordination with the US editorial team, I also collaborated with the marketing department to develop promotional materials for new and upcoming products and events, including Jane's first chem-bio preparedness conference in the United States and Jane's 100th birthday party at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. in 1997.In a project which spanned early 1997 until late 1998, I acquired photographs, secured copyright permissions, and wrote captions for "Jane's Fighter Jets of the World" 1999 mainstream consumer-market calendar (see photos below). Following the success of the video games produced by Electronic Arts (EA) in coordination with the company, the calendar was the next significant attempt by Jane's to leverage the popularity of its brand in the non-professional, consumer market.In my spare time, I also created two paid subscription e-mail newsletters ("Jane's World Affairs Monitor" and "Jane's Space Monitor") in an attempt to reach new customer bases on the edges of the military and intel communities.

I transcribed nightly national TV news broadcasts to supplement the US Department of Defense's "Early Bird" report and a US State Department daily internal report. I was also required to write summaries of the transcriptions for both clients.
