I work to protect Nature and climate for all living creatures. I founded and lead Mighty Earth, a global advocacy organization. We work to break the link between agricultural expansion and deforestation, protect and restore wildlife, and transform major industries like meat, steel and aluminum. I'm proud of some of the big wins we've had like helping drive a 90%+ reduction in deforestation for palm oil and rubber, winning protections for endangered wildlife, helping ban imports of products linked to deforestation to Europe, and sparking major new decarbonization investments in the steel industry. One of the things of which I'm most proud at Mighty Earth is cultivating an "Obsessed with Impact" culture. That obsession is the characteristic that unites Mighty Earthlings: we work to remain laser-focused on impact. We evaluate our success based on results: square kilometers of forest protected, gigatons of climate pollution prevented, species of wildlife saved, and communities helped. As a result, we go where opportunity lies. And while we work on government policy, in many cases we focus on the private sector, where companies are often better positioned than governments to drive large-scale transformation. Going forward, we have pretty lofty goals: transform the meat industry to eliminate deforestation, shift to regenerative agriculture practices, and boost plant-based and cultivated protein; go beyond reducing deforestation to securing $10 billion in investments in restoration; and achieving the complete decarbonization of heavy industry. People are surprised sometimes at how much this relatively modest (but growing) team can accomplish, but I think ultimately the impact-obsessed culture and an amazing team can deliver outsized results on the biggest issues of our time.

  I founded Mighty Earth with the goal of creating the most effective environmental advocacy organization in the world. More than five years later, I think we've got a strong claim to that aspiration, at least on a dollar for dollar basis. Our mantra is "never impossible." The core of our approach is creating a "perfect storm" of communications, engagement, and practical solutions that can drive dramatic changes in industry and government. I'm really proud of the contributions we've made to reducing deforestation in the palm oil industry 95%, a gigaton scale win for climate that has also saved hundreds of thousands of orangutans, forest elephants and tree kangaroos. We've had success in replicating that model in the rubber and steel industries. But with a planet to save, we aren't resting on our successes, and are working to build a culture, team, and resources necessary to solve the world's greatest challenges. Chief among them is transforming the meat industry, which causes more deforestation and climate pollution than the entire transportation sector (this is an even bigger deal than electric cars!!). But we're also working on other gaps in the climate movement, like marshaling a bigger movement to decarbonize heavy industry (steel, cement, chemicals, plastic), source of a quarter of global climate pollution. Through it all, we've worked to bring a business-like approach to the world of advocacy, campaigns, and organizing - and have sought to emulate the Netflix culture described in the book No Rules, Rules.
