Working with friends and colleagues, I seek to change things for the better. During times of change I've been known to share a story or two, some akin to the story below. On an August afternoon in 2001 I joined my dad on a ferry ride. On the deck of the ferry he told me he’d been offered a position as a founder in a consulting firm. “Take it,” I urged. He shook his head. “You know, if my employer said ‘no more pay’ I’d still show up. I love what I do.”Whoa. That's a pearl; a lesson not taught in B school.Pearl in hand, I recommitted. Within two years, I turned around a venture-backed content management company, turning a $1M loss into a profit. We sold the firm (lesson learned: don't sell your firm for stock). I bought into a second firm, a design shop in need of a hand. We became leaders in online publishing and digital marketing with client engagements for NBC, Oxford University Press, RR Donnelley and World Bank. Clients increased profits. As did we.Applying a lesson learned, I sold the company to a wonderful advertising agency. After three years I left for experiential marketing. I was part of the Modern Warfare 2 and BioShock 2 video game launches. Our clients succeeded wildly. I invested in a third firm. Great crew! We built web sales and user acquisition tools and B2B process improvements. We helped clients grow revenues and profits. But wait, confession time: I flunked out of college my first year. I dug ditches, learned the value of hard work and, returning to college, excelled. I was waitlisted at MIT’s Sloan School, got in and earned an MS and LFM Scholarship (thank you, Boeing). With my rocky start things could have gone south so I give back. I started a scholarship supporting students demonstrating thought leadership, started a business plan competition at UMass, started a non-profit annually providing 100s of children holiday gifts, am the Founding Sponsor for an international student Film Festival, initiated an ongoing art supply program for deployed US Military personnel and war prisoners, serve on the Board for the largest Catholic School in Massachusetts, and was treasurer for a 503c developing 150+ affordable housing units. And I love Junior Mints!Under a pen name I've written 100+ stories and a book.I’m an engaged dad to two creative children. Now, if there's an opportunity to assist you, your firm or your community, please LMK as the kids say.

PresidentFuseideas 2018 - PresentWinchester, Ma, UsHaving tamed the operations beast, we focus on creative excellence.Working with kind and smart teammates, we increased yearly profits into the millions, increased average billable rate 40%, fueled client growth with strategic creative, and satisfied leading clients across the US.Having grown from a struggling agency (and man, did we struggle seven years ago!) to a tightly run ship, our sights are set on becoming a great creative agency (which differs from an agency with great creative). Process and profitability are key, but they are boring. And they don’t sell.Creative is fun.Creative sells.Creative retains.Getting to a place where we may immerse ourselves in creative has been a slog.Upon arrival some time ago, I was told, "We're like 'MacGyver'!" I scratched my head, "That's great if you want to bang out one-off projects or defuse bombs strapped to your car, but no one hires MacGyver to grow. F*** MacGyver. We're changing." We started with basics. Project and account responsibility and management. We added industry expertise and research excellence. We introduced agency-wide profit sharing, distributing seven figures to teammates. When the pandemic hit, we reached out to clients. We didn’t ask for payments. We cut contracts to meet the new reality. We provided free services, free hosting, free support. We put client health before agency health. We’re carbon natural. We instituted volunteer days so teammates may give back to our communities. We introduced year round curriculum engaging teammates in topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our commitments to creative and industry combined to earn spots among top 10 agencies in regional destination/travel, airport marketing, and energy sectors. We are the nation's top Lottery agency. We delivery lottery growth.I am responsible for the firm's direction and financial success. I am responsible for enabling creative growth. It's my responsibility to help the team and our clients thrive. -

President: VolunteerProject Elf, Inc. 2003 - PresentEach year a collection of caring and generous individuals quietly bands together to deliver the holidays to families in need. For families in need, the cost of rent or food or electricity takes precedent over Christmas or Hanukkah gifts. And if you've ever been poor (and I hope you have not), you know that is hard. The impact far outweighs the modest annual effort. For four - five weeks a year, I run fund raising, coordinate logistics of inbound and outbound efforts, gather together a wonderfully kind and generous group of Elves, and bang out taxes. The impact is powerful. Project Elf, Inc. produces holiday miracles for hundreds of children at risk of receiving nothing for Christmas or Hanukkah. They are our neighbors; why would we not help?

WriterBeasley Kinkade Publishing Oct 2009 - PresentAuthor (via pen name): for legal community, private collections, and of course family & friendsLimited production run of book donated to 9/11 Memorial & Museum: sold outNearly 20 years ago, on an autumn morning in NYC, I promised my two children I'd put pen to paper in order to record the stories of our lives; so they'd not forget our family's journey. One book, and 100+ short stories later, I've kept my promise. With my (now grown) children's permission, select stories are shared. Some are fantastically inappropriate, some sad, some perhaps beautiful. They seek to provoke thought, reflection, empathy. They reflect lessons learned. They represent a Piece of Us.

Finance Advisor To Board Of Directors, Bod And Corporate Treasurer From 2007-2015Somerville Community Development Corp 2007 - Dec 2017We purchase and redevelop underutilized properties (a closed parish for example) and convert to affordable housing for sale or rent for the benefit of low income families. Assets under management > $40M.Affordable units under ownership > 150 units. On behalf of a thoughtful and passionate board of directors I was responsible for financial team leadership and analysis for the BOD. I reported on cash flow, profit and loss, asset management, and financial risk. Over a seven year period I had the opportunity to coach, teach and mentor BOD members initially unfamiliar with financial statements. By the end of my run, the BOD was grilling me with probing questions, proactively identifying financial opportunities, and exploring strategic planning options with powerful financial analyses skills in hand. Why do we pursue projects too risky for private developers? So the city we love will remain a thriving, balanced and affordable home for families across the economic spectrum.

Partner, Chief Operating Officer Responsible For Operations Management And Sales DevelopmentIfactory 2003 - 2008Boston, Ma, UsWith a great team already in place, national brand recognition and an abundance of existing skills I was lucky to have the chance to purchase just over a quarter of the firm along with its long term debt (which I retired). Together, with the existing team and a strong focus on customer service, business process improvement, and client satisfaction, we turned tough times into long term success as iFactory became an international leader in the online custom publishing industry. Contributing to our successful turnaround, we set up strategic planning and project management processes capable of supporting 25+ concurrent custom web and online publishing projects. We implemented continuous business process improvements. Sure, there was lots of stress, however it paid off as we satisfied and helped grow publishers such as Columbia University Press, Oxford University (OUP), Rosen Publishing and RR Donnelley. With an eye on business development I was fortunate to scope and close engagements for clients such as Cengage Learning, FASB, MIT, NBC and The World Bank.Within two years, our focus on ops and M&A efforts paid off. I applied a lesson from the past and sold the firm to a group of wonderful men and women at RDW (many of whom I still love and admire ... despite the passing of many years). -
Coo, Partner, President Responsible For Business Development, Business Strategy, Project ManagementBeeline Internet Resources / Skyworld 1998 - 2003Venture backed start-up responsible for building first generation radio station web sites, content management systems and ecommerce portals on behalf of Clear Channel (AMFM) America. In addition to serving Clear Channel we worked with leading human resource consultants at Mercer to build and deploy first generation retirement planning portals and intranets for Fortune 500 clients such as BellSouth, Hearst Publishing and IBM. Among other financial clients we designed, developed and deployed a first gen banking site and intranet for Boston Private Bank.Following a founding partner's departure I was responsible for strategic planning, business development, profit and loss, cash flow, reducing seven figures of debt to less than $100,000 and turning a $1M annual loss into a modest profit through new client acquisition efforts and substantial cost cutting. (this turnaround was rather stressful and I must confess I was often sick to my stomach). Our team stayed together and, following the firm's recapitalization, we successfully sold the company (lesson learned: don't ever sell your company in exchange for stock in another private company; doh!).

Managing Director Boston Consulting Responsible For Branch Profit And LossGe Capital 1997 - 1998Norwalk, Ct, UsWell, to tell you the truth I got my tail kicked for two years at GE as I fought far above my weight class. And though our office grew to 20+ consultants and I was charged with improving software project management processes and quality assurance efforts it was tough sledding. With P&L responsibility I was charged with forecasting revenue, managing costs, meeting profitability targets, and managing a staff of app dev and hardware sales and installation consultants. The lessons learned at GE – lessons regarding project scoping, clear assumption & client expectation setting, client service, HR management, the importance of technical training, quality assurance and the need to always be engaged with (and satisfying) clients – were painfully gained. Years later these lessons contributed to my ability to manage, grow and sell a successful consultancy when they were applied at BeeLine and iFactory. -
Manager, Managing Director Responsible For Business Line Profit And LossFeld Technologies / Ameridata (Acquired By Ge Capital Consulting) 1993 - 1997Prior to AmeriData’s acquisition by GE Cap I was promoted from Manager of the LAN/WAN Group to Managing Director. I was responsible for profit & loss, revenue growth and supporting our office’s collaboration with dozens of AmeriData’s equipment sales offices. To work with local AmeriData offices I developed a transfer pricing mechanism ensuring margin for us and the commission-focused hardware sales teams across regional AmeriData offices. With a strong team of technically savvy and experienced LAN/WAN consultants already in place we grew to be the Boston area’s leading local LAN/WAN system installation team.On the app dev side I cut my teeth helping to right the ship on a number of wayward projects. Together, with a dynamic software group leader, we implemented new project scoping methods, project management processes and quality assurance efforts. With these systems in place the leaders of the app dev team were able to sell large scale financial applications to Boston’s leading venture and fund management firms. I threw up a lot but, then again, I learned a lot too.

Co-Manager Responsible For Client Service And Business Line Profit And LossFeld Technologies 1992 - 1993Together with a passionate, client focused and deeply experienced co-manager, we grew a two person LAN team to a group of 10 LAN/WAN consultants selling hardware at 25% margins and installing and maintaining client systems. Following the lead of an existing consultant, we developed our own line of PCs (the "BSD"), sourced all equipment, assembled, sold direct and installed at client locations earning 50% margins. In addition to co-management responsibilities and sponsorship of the BSD PC program, I was responsible for setting up our inbound ticketing system capable of fielding over 100 daily requests via phone, email, pager and fax (yes, I know I am dating myself!). In addition to inbound queries the system supported client quotes, client service calls and installation scheduling. In summary, my co-manager and I generated substantial margins for an extremely well run private firm. The firm was run by two remarkable young entrepreneurs from MIT, Brad Feld and Dave Jilk. Brad and Dave, you introduced me to the entrepreneurial spirit and the concept of business ownership. Drawing from the lessons you shared (both overt and implied), my risk profile changed, my understanding of business ownership took root, and success in an entrepreneurial career was launched. I am in your debt and for these lessons and I thank you both.Though there were many lessons learned, this was a stressful experience as I started off knowing nothing (goose egg!) about servers, LANs or WANs, but the people were great and I learned. And we had fun growing and learning together. -
Manager Responsible For Production And Process ImprovementPsg 1991 - 1992Before my arrival PSG was known as one of the best – if not the best – custom art frame shops in the Northeast. For decades the firm served the leading fine art galleries and museums of Boston and NYC. The PSG brand, the people, the skills, the experience and the gallery relationships existed prior to my arrival. They just needed a system around which to operate. Working with the existing team, I provided that system.Following a thorough but quick review of the production flow and manufacturing cycle we redesigned the entire process beginning with inbound order taking and tracking to final product delivery. Applying the basic lessons of Steven Wheelwright’s Dynamic Manufacturing (yes, I paid attention in school) we replaced a custom job shop process with a batch flow process covering north of 100 custom units each week. The result? Product production cycle time dropped from a cycle measured in days to one measured in hours. Overtime plunged, quality improved and, when times got tough the firm was able to trim staff without trimming quality and revenues. Profits bloomed. This is a wonderfully managed and run private firm. I trust PSG’s team and ownership with the framing of many works in our collection. I am proud to call myself a completely satisfied PSG Framing customer.

Research Analyst Responsible For Consulting, Data Collection And Conclusion GenerationMit 1990 - 1991Cambridge, Ma, UsAs a grad student at MIT I was poor; I mean really poor. My roommate fronted me money to pay for heat and I regularly ate Wheaties (breakfast of what? You got it; champions!) three times a day. To pay my first semester tuition I borrowed money from my parents and took a $5k cash advance on my Visa Card. Grad school was a chance to move up a notch and I took it seriously. I focused, studied and prepared. And after being forced to defend lending decisions in many a loan committee meeting at First Bank, I knew how to argue. Preparation and focus paid off when Professor Rebecca Henderson invited me to join her research efforts on behalf of Boeing Aircraft and, later, Hewlett Packard, under the umbrella of MIT’s Leaders for Manufacturing Program. In exchange for support of Dr. Henderson’s research Boeing and MIT paid my tuition and a modest stipend. Dr. Henderson was – and remains – from the future smart and I learned more from her approach to research and client engagement than I did in any classroom (sorry Sloan, I still love you).I was responsible for evaluating 60 or so Boeing process improvement projects – spanning successful and failed efforts – evaluating their financial performance, ROI and impact on quality. In addition to generating regression analyses to define contributing variables I interviewed dozens and dozens of engineers, plant managers, line employees and aircraft designers to collect the data necessary to prove and disprove our hypotheses. Rebecca Henderson, Boeing and MIT taught me how to consult; how to help firms improve their production processes and how to save money. And if Dr. Henderson or my friends at Boeing or MIT are reading this I wish to say, “Thank you.” -
Commercial Loan Officer, Loan Officer Trainee Responsible For Loan Review And Credit RecommendationsFirst Bank Aug 1986 - Sep 1988When I think of First Bank I cannot help but smile as I recall learning how to read financial statements, make financial decisions and defend those decisions before senior staff. Today I regularly apply the lessons learned at First Bank to my current work as a business co-owner and to my work on behalf of the Somerville Community Development Corp. CDC.At First Bank I was taken under the wing of the bank’s EVP, Wally Armstrong, with responsibility for making yes/no loan recommendations for small business loans and real estate development projects. While in the Bank’s loan officer training program I qualified loan apps, processed applications and, more importantly, learned how to read a cash flow, P&L and balance sheet in order to make and support a decision. I learned how to identify risk and opportunities and I learned how to tell if someone was going to succeed or fall short on the cash management front.I learned what it takes to align strategy and finance in order to make a project – and business – succeed.
