I am leading a new effort at Ford to rethink how factories are designed, built, and run.Henry Ford invented the assembly line in 1910 and pioneered early motion studies and efficiency in manufacturing. That was over 110 years ago, and the industry is still "continuously improving" it. I'm not going to say that it's a bad approach, but it may be time for the next 110-year arc of history.The word "manufacturing" comes from the Latin "manu" (hand) and "facere" (to make), and literally means "to make by hand." A new word is needed: "autofacturing" which combines the notion of automation and automobiles and manufacturing.I'm on it.

I started this company when I saw an opportunity to make a much better, smarter, connected appliance -- and combine washing and drying, which should've been done [right] a long time ago. Wired Magazine calls our machine the "Tesla of Appliances."We built a sophisticated software platform for IoT / smart home and created a major appliance in a very short period of time.Built a [small] factory from scratch, developed PLM software that's better than what the big guys use. Inventory and supply chain for manufacturing, bar-coded assembly process tracking, real-time factory floor monitoring, all hybrid / cloud.

I started this meetup group for Product Design on the SF peninsula, and grew it to over 800 members in 3 years, with some truly notable meetup events with speakers including Dale Dougherty, founder of Make magazine and the Maker Faire, Walt Conti, who worked on James Cameron's submarine and mechatronic whales for Free Willy, and some early IDEO pioneers. It was an amazing group of designers and engineers.

I founded Five Across in 2003 to create compelling network software. We built innovative peer-to-peer file sharing and messaging, blogging, and social networking software, back when Facebook only had 50 employees. We could do group messaging in 2003 that Facebook finally delivered 12 years later. Five Across was acquired by Cisco in February of 2007.

Hired a small team and created iMovie 1.0 out of thin air in 1998, based on a whiteboard drawing.Hand picked by Apple CEO Steve Jobs to create Apple's iMovie consumer video editing software from scratch. Architected and implemented the application within 9 months with a team of two other engineers. iMovie won two Eddy awards: Best Digital Video Software, and Software of the Year. Worked hundreds of hours directly with Steve, in designing iMovie features and interface details. Designed and built iMovie 2.0 close on the heels of 1.0 to cement iMovie's leadership in the consumer video marketplace, adding several innovative features including reverse, fast and slow motion in real time. This was 1999, people. Apple ran prime-time TV ads with Jeff Goldblum showing off iMovie. It was that kind of big deal.iMovie was the kick-start to the entire Applications division at Apple, which did not exist when I started. We conceived and implemented the "digital hub" media strategy which led to the iTunes acquisition and iPhoto development as well as the beginnings of the consumer electronics that became iPod, iPhone and iPad.Created iPhoto 1.0 through 4.0 with a small team, working directly with executive staff on all aspects of design and implementation. Had the amazing experience of watching Steve Jobs demo iPhoto 1.0 at his keynote with a picture of my daughter full screen, while the slide show feature played Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison. Steve said, "This is why we do what we do." How could you not shed a few tears.As Director of Engineering, I managed the iMovie and iPhoto teams, including the QA department. Built a highly successful organization, most of which is still in place more than 10 years later.

The company's flagship product was Painter, a rival to Photoshop. I helped the founders grow the Engineering team and processes through a merger (MetaTools) and the company going public.

Left NeXT to start a company building software for NeXT computers. Developed and sold PasteUp, an award-winning page layout app, and the first/only completely object-oriented text engine in the world. Buy me a wee dram of scotch and I'll tell you all about it. Several other products, and resold Adobe fonts for the NeXT platform.

Worked for Steve Jobs (who recruited me, and was acting VP Marketing at the time) as product manager for Interpersonal Computing, which was to become the entire Internet, but we didn't quite realize it at the time.You could say that I was the original Product Manager for the Internet, since the WWW was invented on NeXT computers at the same time.
