Hell bent on changing the world, one product category at a time. I've got a pretty good running start.I am a founder, CEO, engineer, and designer. I started as a software engineer at Adobe, helping to revolutionize the printing industry. We were controlling photocopiers with embedded, networked computers -- they called them laser printers, but they were a precursor to the Internet of Things.I got into hardware 13 years ago to pursue problems in the real world instead of entertaining you and selling you ads. My background is equal parts Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, and manufactured products is where they meet.I'm with Ford Motor Company now, at the R&D lab in Palo Alto working on reimagining manufacturing as a software-defined process.A few years back, I started a company called Marathon Machines to disrupt a $14B domestic industry — the Internet of Things and the Smart Home doing something actually useful: laundry. We designed and manufactured a revolutionary washer/dryer combo that was the smartest and most configurable machine in the world. We started in California but moved the company to Milwaukee, where I reconnected with heartland manufacturing. Some years before that I created the revolutionary iMovie 1.0 at Apple with a team of 3 people — ahead of schedule. Then I built iPhoto 1.0 with a team of 5 people. I managed both products through 4 releases and tens of millions of users. I am the primary inventor on a dozen or so Apple patents related to both of those products.I spent hundreds of hours in front of white boards with Steve Jobs, designing products. It was a great experience, and I'm proud to have worked with him. I'm also pretty sure I'm the only person who has quit on Steve three different times, all for good reasons — it also means he hired me three times, which itself says something.I raised venture capital once in 2003 for a network technology company, and after 4 quick years, returned 21.5x to my investors. In addition to just being good at technical stuff, I have the ability to truly *design* products and solutions that are groundbreaking, lead teams to success, navigate the complex landscapes of technology and company structures, and deliver. I've done it over and over.If you're looking for the best, and you need "out of the box" thinking, I'm your guy.

Digital Manufacturing SystemsFord Motor Company Mar 2024 - PresentDearborn, Michigan, UsI am leading a new effort at Ford to rethink how factories are designed, built, and run.Henry Ford invented the assembly line in 1910 and pioneered early motion studies and efficiency in manufacturing. That was over 110 years ago, and the industry is still "continuously improving" it. I'm not going to say that it's a bad approach, but it may be time for the next 110-year arc of history. The word "manufacturing" comes from the Latin "manu" (hand) and "facere" (to make), and literally means "to make by hand." A new word is needed: "autofacturing" which combines the notion of automation and automobiles and manufacturing.I'm on it. -
Founder/CeoMarathon Machines, Inc. Aug 2016 - Nov 2023I started this company when I saw an opportunity to make a much better, smarter, connected appliance -- and combine washing and drying, which should've been done [right] a long time ago. Wired Magazine calls our machine the "Tesla of Appliances."We built a sophisticated software platform for IoT / smart home and created a major appliance in a very short period of time.Built a [small] factory from scratch, developed PLM software that's better than what the big guys use. Inventory and supply chain for manufacturing, bar-coded assembly process tracking, real-time factory floor monitoring, all hybrid / cloud.

OrganizerPeninsula Product Design (Meetup Group) May 2012 - Jun 2016I started this meetup group for Product Design on the SF peninsula, and grew it to over 800 members in 3 years, with some truly notable meetup events with speakers including Dale Dougherty, founder of Make magazine and the Maker Faire, Walt Conti, who worked on James Cameron's submarine and mechatronic whales for Free Willy, and some early IDEO pioneers. It was an amazing group of designers and engineers.

Director Of Engineering, Consumer ApplicationsApple Computer 1998 - 2003Cupertino, California, UsHired a small team and created iMovie 1.0 out of thin air in 1998, based on a whiteboard drawing.Hand picked by Apple CEO Steve Jobs to create Apple's iMovie consumer video editing software from scratch. Architected and implemented the application within 9 months with a team of two other engineers. iMovie won two Eddy awards: Best Digital Video Software, and Software of the Year. Worked hundreds of hours directly with Steve, in designing iMovie features and interface details. Designed and built iMovie 2.0 close on the heels of 1.0 to cement iMovie's leadership in the consumer video marketplace, adding several innovative features including reverse, fast and slow motion in real time. This was 1999, people. Apple ran prime-time TV ads with Jeff Goldblum showing off iMovie. It was that kind of big deal.iMovie was the kick-start to the entire Applications division at Apple, which did not exist when I started. We conceived and implemented the "digital hub" media strategy which led to the iTunes acquisition and iPhoto development as well as the beginnings of the consumer electronics that became iPod, iPhone and iPad.Created iPhoto 1.0 through 4.0 with a small team, working directly with executive staff on all aspects of design and implementation. Had the amazing experience of watching Steve Jobs demo iPhoto 1.0 at his keynote with a picture of my daughter full screen, while the slide show feature played Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison. Steve said, "This is why we do what we do." How could you not shed a few tears. As Director of Engineering, I managed the iMovie and iPhoto teams, including the QA department. Built a highly successful organization, most of which is still in place more than 10 years later. -
