About Glenn Sargent

I am a dedicated professional who is committed to helping students reach their full potential. I feel the best way to do this is by guiding them to discover answers for themselves, thus encouraging the pupils to take ownership of their learning experiences and be proud of what they achieve. This allows for the development of their subject specific knowledge, but also improves their problem solving, which enables them to become independent learners. I believe this is important as the students start their next venture into further education or employment after leaving school. To ensure this is possible, I plan challenging lessons which is driven by my enthusiasm and commitment for PE and sport. These lessons encourage all students to make progress through differentiated tasks which provides an engaging activity and also allows them to make progress above their current working level.

  • Walney School
    Physical Education Teacher
Walney School Sep 2015 - Present
Whilst completing my NQT year, I quickly established myself as a valued member of staff through the setting of high standards and planning exciting lessons. This was fuelled by accurate assessment for learning. During my second year I was successful when applying to become the Head of Year 8 which eventually led to a promotion to Head of Year 8 and 9. I am very proud to have earned this role as I am able to aid students, academically, socially and emotionally. I do this through stringent monitoring of progress, behaviours and achievements, whilst liaising with family members. To reward successes, I enjoy planning and delivering rewards trips for students who show most effort across the school.  During the last academic year, I was also the Acting Head of PE as a result of a staff illness, although this was challenging on top of my other roles, I relished the opportunity to better the department and the opportunities available to the students.
  • Dallam School
    Trainee Pe Teacher
    Dallam School Jan 2015 - Jul 2015
    Milnethorpe
Whilst at Dallam I was a student on the Schools Direct Teacher Training program, completing my second placement. This has involved fulfilling all the roles and responsibilities of a qualified teacher. As such I have been teaching PE lessons across all year groups, as well as GCSE and A level. This has been completed during lessons and through leading extra-curricular activities and fixtures which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I have also taken an active role as a form tutor, which has allowed me to foster supportive relationships and encourage students to fulfil their potential. This was done through participating in whole school events, developing a positive learning environment and by addressing success and behaviour issues of students in my form.
  • Dowdales School
    Trainee Pe Teacher
    Dowdales School Oct 2014 - Dec 2014
    Dalton In Furness
As part of my Schools Direct Teacher Training program, I was placed at Dowdales for my first placement. I taught a range of winter sports activities for all age ranges, as well as teaching GCSE theory and practical PE lessons. As well as this, I took an active role in leading extra-curricular activities, which ranged from football matches, cross country events and gymnastics clubs. I also participated in whole school events as part of my role as a form tutor, where I encouraged participation in fundraising. For example, I took part in baking goods to sell for charity, giving gifts to homeless people at Christmas and selling tickets to the rewards evenings to celebrate the success of the students. Another aspect of my role as a teacher required me to write reports and liaise with students and parents to review progress. This was needed for the pupils I taught as well as the students in my form group. I relished this role as it enabled me to support students and aid them in fulfilling their potential in all aspects of their school life. To do this successfully, I engaged fully in school meetings, insets and conferences, which aided me in completing my job successfully.
  • Furness Academy Limited
    Unqualified Pe Teacher
Furness Academy Limited Sep 2009 - Aug 2014
    Barrow-In-Furness
As a result of Thorncliffe merging with other schools to form an academy, a position became available for me to utilise my skills within the PE department. My new role involved; teaching canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing, mountain leadership and mountain biking. My other roles included supporting teachers in lessons and maintaining the sports equipment and facilities. This role has been most enjoyable as I have been able to learn from experienced members of staff and also continue my development as a teacher which will help me in my pursuit of a career working within a Secondary School PE department.
  • Thorncliffe Secondary School
    Teaching Assistant
Thorncliffe Secondary School Sep 2008 - Aug 2009
    Barrow-In-Furness
I chose to work at Thorncliffe as I had a desire to work with young people within a school environment as it offered a fresh challenge for me. It also enabled me to help people in their long term development rather than the short term courses ran at Lakeside. I enjoyed this period of my career as it allowed me to gain more knowledge of working with young people with disabilities, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
  • Ymca National Centre, Lakeside
    Youth Tutor
Ymca National Centre, Lakeside Oct 2007 - Sep 2008
    Lakesiden Newbey Bridge
I continued to work at Lakeside and began leading intense youth courses where I acted as a facilitator in their learning process. These are the courses I most enjoyed at Lakeside as it was both challenging and fun trying to get a desired outcome from unpredictable individuals. Before I left lakeside I was promoted to a position where I trained and assessed new instructors and apprentices. I feel this was as a result of my dedication to helping others better themselves and it was the work I was most proud of in my career in the outdoor industry.
  • Ymca National Centre, Lakeside
    Apprentice Youth Tutor
Ymca National Centre, Lakeside Oct 2006 - Oct 2007
    Lakeside Newbey Bridge
At the start of the apprenticeship a period of training was provided to continue my professional development. This included sessions of canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and mountain leadership. Once the training had finished I began shadowing other instructors on School, youth and corporate group activities. I was taught the different needs and coaching styles required for each group. It wasn’t long until I was confident enough to run sessions myself as I was eager to take a lead. By the end of my apprenticeship I was the most highly qualified student in the year group, this as a result of me passing National governing body awards in Canoeing, kayaking, rock climbing and mountain leadership.
  • Ymca National Centre, Lakeside
    Day Camp Instructor
Ymca National Centre, Lakeside Jul 2005 - Sep 2005
    Lakeside Newbey Bridge
It was during my time at Lakeside where my interest in coaching developed further. At first, I was employed during the summer to run fun activity sessions for school children in the surrounding communities. Leading these activities gave me great pride in the way I could help other people develop and succeed. This made me realise I wanted to develop myself as an activity leader.
