Devops Engineer - Content Security And Serialization Lab

As DevSecOps Lead for my team, I managed multiple AWS accounts and microservices and made numerous improvements to the reliability and availability of our services. I completed the planning and execution of a Terraform-driven migration of our docker-based microservices across AWS accounts, converting our ad hoc infrastructure management to Terraform. In addition to instituting monitoring and alerting for all our services, I added healthcheck endpoints and moved our services to an immutable deployment model, thus ending our deployment downtime issues. I also moved our team to use centralized ELK cloud logging enabling a dependable troubleshooting process.I enhanced security for our services in many areas as well, such as moving the team from IAM User tokens to IAM Roles and instituting our move to AWS Secrets Manager for sensitive environment variable management. I established a regular patching process for our services and regular audits for our S3 buckets too.I reduced our monthly AWS costs by eliminating over-provisioning and through the deletion of unused legacy infrastructure, and I manage our Jenkins CI/CD pipeline, having recently migrated it from a legacy snowflake instance to a docker-based system with separate agent servers.I enjoyed writing scripts in Ruby and Bash and was known on the team as the person who is constantly looking for ways to automate manual tasks. I'm was also known as the 'go to' person when folks have questions about regular expressions.

Software Engineer - Pilots And Incubations Lab

Hp

Palo Alto, Ca, Us

In the Pilots and Incubation Lab I began my first involvement with cloud infrastructure and with DevOps work, first moving the team's services to HP's Helion cloud service and then later migrating it all to AWS. I found the work really enjoyable as I learned and applied my new knowledge of CICD, Jenkins, Docker, AWS Beanstalk, Chef, and Capistrano. I made extensive use of Bash as well, as I automated our CICD pipeline and created tools to speed development.I also did software development, working mostly on REST APIs and web apps using Ruby on Rails and RubyMine. Ruby became (and remains!) my favorite programming language. I used it to help create our various subscribable "HP Personalized Publications" such as "GoGuide", "TvTonight", and "Calendar". I also did Ruby work on "Olympia", a high-throughput, highly available, scalable job processing service framework for 3D manufacturing, learning Resque and Redis along the way.In addition to Ruby, I worked in Java, using Eclipse and Maven, and created our Java library SDK, which provided full access for Java developers to our "Link" image watermarking REST API. I also helped pioneer our use of AWS Kinesis and DynamoDB for click-stream processing to support our "Simplify Page" printing function available in mobile apps, browser plug-ins, and browsers.I earned my three ScrumAlliance Certifications while on the team (ScrumMaster, Product Owner, and Developer) and I have kept the certifications current by attending local Scrum events. On the team, I acted as Product Owner for our REST API Developer Documentation site, and also acted as ScrumMaster now and again.

Software Engineer - Factory Systems Group

Hp

Palo Alto, Ca, Us

As Project Manager of the Java EE "DAMAC" project, my team of four overseas developers eliminated manufacturing line downtime losses caused by database access interruptions. Our product enabled the alerting of account owners, managers, line engineers and technicians, whenever there was impending service interruption. In addition to working as the Project Manager, I acted in the Product Owner role using the XP (Extreme Programming) methodology, interacting with on-site engineers and technicians to define system features. Development iterations were quick and I managed them with the Agilefant on-line story tracking tool.Customer satisfaction was very high, as the engineers and technicians communicated numerous times how they appreciated the close relationship and quick turnaround on features. That relationship made the project very rewarding for me, as well as for the overseas developers, for whom this was their first agile project.

2011 - 2013 ~2 yrs

Software Engineer - Factory Systems Group

Hp

Palo Alto, Ca, Us

As one of the lead Java developers in the Factory Systems Group, I re-architected a legacy system called "Kahuna AWST Data Entry" into a tiered object-oriented system and added an extensible plugin interface. I wrote a plugin to allow dynamically creating Java objects and their relationships, driven from configuration files that defined real-world test fixture configurations, enabling for the first time, accurate ink consumption calculations.I also reduced manufacturing line losses with my work helping create "WWSPC", a VB .Net system allowing engineers to create Statistical Process Control charts by defining data sources, control rules, threshold limits, and chart display configurations. I implemented a number of .Net COM plug-ins for WWSPC, including a C# "Alarm Control Object" plug-in supporting alarm notification emails, text messages, as well as manufacturing line shutdown messages.

2000 - 2011 ~11 yrs

Software Engineer - Measurement And Instrumentation Technology Group

Hp

Palo Alto, Ca, Us

My design and development work on "VST" and "K9" for the MIT lab enabled other HP software engineers to more quickly and easily build complex test systems for ink cartridge testing. "VST" was a C++ library of abstract scientific instrument representations, and "K9" a DCOM-based plug-in framework. Together, they enabled composing a software representation of the instruments involved in various ink cartridge test systems, allowing easy setup, configuration and data collection. From "VST" and "K9" I helped build a number of systems, including "OverLife" to replace an older more expensive cartridge lifetime measurement system, and "Velociraptor" a complex collection of instruments to collect and analyze data on ink drop size and velocity from a laser Doppler velocimeter.I also was a champion on the team for the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and initiated an assessment of the team's processes, as well as providing administration of various Microsoft servers including IIS, MS SQL Server and our Configuration Management server.
