The spirit of adventure calls me every day. So does my job as a healthcare Chief Operating Officer.Having dual allegiances could be problematic, but my default goes to solutions…how to take challenges and break them into solvable components.THE HEALTHCARE CHALLENGEHealthcare is an industry desperate for solutions. Rising costs and accessible care are problematic. The system is ill, and the cure rests on the shoulders of healthcare leadership.A new paradigm is needed. As many have said, healthcare today is like building a plane while flying it.FOUNDATIONAL COMMITMENTI was attracted to healthcare through a personal experience. My young cousin Byron was diagnosed with a rare form of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and I was his daytime caregiver. I learned about hospitals, infection control, medication, chemotherapy…and life. Byron taught me persistence and to have fun, because life is short. He ultimately succumbed to his disease; I ultimately became a pharmacist. I’ve given back where I can, striving to have fun in what I do.EIGHT LEADERSHIP PILLARSBeing a good leader means everything to me. After years of trial and training, my style rests on 8 operational pillars:➤ Leadership: I work through others. Being a good people reader helps me build appropriate teams to get things done.➤ Translation: Everyone in healthcare has a unique reason for their career choice, and the common denominator is patient care. As long as what we do and how we do it translates to better patient care, the team is motivated.➤ Coaching/Mentorship: I meet regularly with my staff to recognize their growth, help unearth their passions, and focus on them as individuals. I help them grow into their next role.➤ Team Development: I like diverse teams. We grow together and learn to manage our differences for the sake of our shared mission.➤ Systemness: Our system serves our patient. All other affiliations, relationships, and loyalties, locally or regionally, serve this common good. Period.➤ Strategic Structure: Teams, tools, and quarterly goals.
