About Glen Howell
At Statistics Canada, I work as a psychological scientist with the Organizational Health team. We conduct research and apply concepts and theories from organizational psychology to inform challenges to Human Resources and Corporate Strategy. We link our Employee Wellness Survey data with administrative data (e.g., sick leave, turnover) under strict privacy constraints to robustly assess employee psychological health and its key drivers and outcomes. We focus on statistically prioritizing key drivers of psychological health and provide leaders their results with clear indication of areas of relative strength and potential improvement. We work with internal partners to evaluate, or inform, their efforts to improve employee psychological health, and have started to generate possible new solutions ourselves. We also co-developed an innovative PowerBI dashboard to present the survey results, while at the same time continue to publish our work in peer-reviewed journals.In previous work, I conducted survey research and analysis on topics that informed human resource management of the Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence. The work covered the full cycle of research starting from a priority request through literature review, research design, data collection, data analysis, reporting, and recommendations. I also enjoyed working on private sector contracts through my registered business, Howell Research Consulting. That work mainly involved data analysis and reporting to inform strategic human resource management on a wide range of organizational issues (e.g., attraction and recruitment, selection tests, employee engagement, turnover/retention). With over 10 years of experience now, my career objective and professional raison d'être have remained the same! My goal is to pair scientifically creative ideas with strong research designs and analysis to address complex organizational challenges for the benefit of workforces (people) and businesses.
