Principal Engineer

Current

London, England, Gb

Post Money Dashboard (MDB) acquisition I am now the Principal Engineer in ClearScore's Open Banking Services Division. Purchasing MDB allowed ClearScore to bring Open Banking expertise in-house and allowed them to discontinue using 3rd party providers. The distributed Open Banking platform I designed and developed for Money Dashboard is now at the heart of all Open Banking features for ClearScore UK and is also powering ClearScore's new B2B business called DataOne.I remain fully hands-on and delivery-focused in developing and improving our growing Open Banking platform, which has seamlessly scaled to handle millions of users as well as millions of financial transactions and time-sensitive Open Banking API calls every day. Since the integration of the MDB Open Banking Stack into ClearScore, ClearScore has won the "Open Banking Provider of the Year" at the P2P Finance Awards, the "Excellence in Open Banking" award at the Credit Awards, and more recently the "Open Banking System Excellence of the Year" award at the 2024 Fintech Awards London.

Mar 2022 - Present

Head Of Engineering

Edinburgh, Scotland, Gb

Prior to the company sale to ClearScore, I managed Money Dashboard's engineering team of frontend, backend, and data engineers. Reporting directly to the CEO I was responsible for the day-to-day activities of the team as well as the management and delivery of all our software and AWS development projects.Fully hands-on, I took part in our development sprints and continued to design and develop the extensive .NET Core backend systems.I was heavily involved in the due diligence process during the ClearScore buyout, acting as the technical liasion between Money Dashboard, ClearScore's buyout team, and the lawyers.

Sep 2021 - Mar 2022

Head Of Integrations, Open Banking Architect & Principal Engineer

Edinburgh, Scotland, Gb

I was the company's Principal Engineer and also led the integrations of new banks, payment providers and other 3rd party services into the multi-award-winning, personal finance application, Money Dashboard.I was heavily involved in redesigning the software and systems architecture away from a monolithic design, into a microservices design based on Docker Containers (running on AWS ECS) and AWS Lambda functions. On the coding side, I designed and developed a .NET Core 'Integrations Framework' that allowed us to integrate a large number of new financial providers including Monzo, Starling, Coinbase, Chip, Revolut, PensionBee, all Open Banking v1.1 banks and all Open Banking v3.1 banks.I was also involved in designing and developing the company's first B2B API-based application - Categorisation as a Service. I was part of the architecture team that designed the AWS Lambda/Docker(ECS) system and personally developed all of the .NET Core and Python lambdas that drive the system.Worked to very tight deadlines to deliver a number of integrations as part of Money Dashboard's Crowdfunding campaign - Scotland's largest to date. All integrations named in the Crowdfunding brochures, websites, and videos were developed by me - some, such as the Coinbase integration, on incredibly short timescales.

Feb 2018 - Sep 2021

Azure Solution Architect / C# Developer (Contract)

Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Gb

After spending a year at WorldRemit I returned to both contracting and the award-winning, Azure-based, Rights Management System I wrote for the Open University (see description below 2010-2016).I was commissioned again primarily to add a powerful contract generation templating engine into the existing system, allowing Executive Producers and Commissioners at the University to automatically generate legal contracts for hiring independent film companies directly within the Azure-based system.I also migrated some of the most resource hungry aspects of the system out of the C# WebApp and into event-driven Azure Serverless Functions (Functions simply weren’t available when the project was initially written). This has allowed a 50% saving in monthly App Service charges. Finally, I worked on a number of smaller improvements: - Added 2FA to the login process for external suppliers- Integrated Azure Active Directory for OU staff members- Tuned the CTE SQL queries and complex reporting queries that has allowed a service-tier drop in Azure SQL Database, again saving 50% on DB costs.

May 2017 - Jan 2018

Azure Cloud Architect

London, England, Gb

My primary responsibilities at WorldRemit were to lead the engineering team that develops, manages and maintains WorldRemit’s core production platform-as-a-service in the cloud (Azure). My role was central within the Product & Engineering department and I was responsible for ensuring that the WorldRemit technical platform, environments, the Continuous Integration pipeline and core infrastructure innovated and adapted. On a project level, I was responsible for designing a new highly-available, geographically-dispersed architecture for the WorldRemit consumer and customer service applications, along with the corresponding Azure service stack and SQL databases. I was also responsible for designing the WorldRemit’s move from Azure classic, where, as an early adopter, WorldRemit were heavily invested, over to Azure’s newer ARM platform. As a Microsoft high potential client, I frequently liaised with the senior Cloud Solution Architects at Microsoft, spoke directly to the Azure engineers in Redmond to solve Azure issues, and involved WorldRemit in the Azure early adopter releases (globally distributed DocumentDB - now Cosmos DB & Azure Container Service).I was also responsible for designing and then leading the development team building WorldRemit’s planned Open Source project called CloudMaker. CloudMaker was an ASP MVC application (with a corresponding Windows Service backend on a VM) that WorldRemit were planning to use to build and maintain all their Azure development, test and production environments. Think of it as a point-and-click way to build the ‘code’ in the ‘infrastructure-as-code’ process.

Azure Solution Architect / C# Developer (Contract)

Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, Gb

At the Open University I architected and developed a bespoke Digital Media and Rights Management platform that is used in the generation of blended-learning content by staff University-wide and by external video Production Companies. The system has been very well received both inside and outside the University and it has won both 'The Digital Innovation of the Year' award at the Times Higher Education Awards and the 'Best Cloud Project of the Year' at the Computer Weekly European User Awards 2015 - both in June 2015.The platform I designed and developed is a Microsoft Azure Cloud based application. The Open University uses it to manage the production of the 1000s of hours of audio/video content it creates each year for both its students and the general public. The system is written mainly in C# and uses a number of Azure technologies such as: App Service, SQL Database, Redis Cache, Media Services, Azure Search and Blob Storage. In my architect role I designed the Azure hosted system and liaised with the University's Architecture Board and the business users to ensure its feature set and University approval. In my developer role I developed the ASP.NET application and also the supporting tools and the integrations with existing University systems.
