About Garrett Leverick
As a curious person with a knack for diving into details, particle physics was a field that suited me well. After six years of rigorous study (an undergrad and masters) I’ve transferred my data analysis skills to the air travel industry! I thoroughly enjoyed my undergraduate and masters degrees, including the 4 cumulative years of research experience where I was able to teach myself technologies on the cutting edge of research while participating in international large-scale research collaborations. These days I am at FlightHub, one of Canada’s leading online travel agencies! I analyze large swaths of marketing data to optimize certain revenue streams.I enjoy learning new things and solving problems, and I am always looking for opportunities to expand my horizons and grow as a professional. I am also interested in ultimate Frisbee, basketball, hockey, video games, and cooking. I am fluent in English, have a working proficiency in French, and can speak a little German, too.

Masters Student
- Became part of the Belle-II collaboration (>1000 researchers)- Taught myself jupyter notebooks, pandas library, and the Belle-II collaboration’s software framework- Created and explored data-sets provided by the software framework to optimize performance of a sub-detector- Engineered two features that better clusterize data which is then classified via a boosted decision trees model- Found novel insights to the Belle-II detector performance and documented them in my thesis- Presented results at Canadian Physics Conference (CAP 2023)- Stayed two months in Italy to collaborate with a senior researcher- Developed software in C++ and Python to update a three year old physics analysis and analyzed the resulting data. My software was merged to the main analysis framework.- Revealed an unexpected geometric effect in the Belle II detector which can be exploited to reduce detector noise- My C++ software can be applied in other analyses and my updated analysis script (Python) will help validate new releases of Belle-II’s software framework- Found a major, longstanding bug within the Belle-II software which was subsequently fixed
Undergraduate Student
- Performed temperature measurements of electronics in a vacuum system with a prototype a cooling system- Taught myself Autodesk Inventor and CFD to design a prototype electronic cooling system and 3D print it- Reported methods and findings in my undergraduate thesis
Undergraduate Student Researcher
- Performed particle physics simulations using Geant4 on the Digital Research Alliance of Canada's HPC facilities- Analyzed simulation data using ROOT (a C++ package for particle physics analyses) to explore the simulation data
Undergraduate Student Researcher
- Developed a data acquisition system for a silicon strip detector test bench- Programmed a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) in VHDL to be implemented in a data acquisition system- Configured electronics (silicon strip detector and amplifier and discriminator board) for data aquisition system- Analyzed resulting data to demonstrate a proof of concept detector implementation
