Professor Timothy Dye is a medical anthropologist and social epidemiologist who specializes in applied public health, particularly within marginalized, isolated, and global populations, and with a content focus on social and cultural determinants of health. Additionally, Dr. Dye's work commonly provides unique opportunities in biomedical informatics and data science, particularly at the intersection of social science and health. Dr. Dye’s research program works with underrepresented and marginalized communities around the world to address health priorities, often through technology and human-centered design. Dr. Dye's research program views humans in their ecological context, understanding that social, biological, environmental, and other factors interact to impact health and illness, and that structural barriers often preclude ethical engagement of indigenous, marginalized, and underrepresented peoples in the scientific enterprise. Dye's lab values deep inclusion, respect, and self-determination among its members and partners; and they strive to prioritize the voices of underrepresented and cultural identities in their work.Dr. Dye has worked in more than 30 countries around the world, and in many communities across Northern America, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The work of his lab reflects the integration of qualitative, quantitative, community, and laboratory approaches to science. The lab is deliberately pragmatic, applied, and focused on action.While the Dye Lab involves research that evolves with its members, and includes: 1) Global Health, with a special emphasis on Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia and the Pacific, and Global Deaf Health, 2) Perinatal Health, with a special emphasis on social determinants of medical risk in pregnancy and childhood, 3)Technology, in the creation and maintenance of communities of learning, in communication, and to stimulate action, and 4) Innovative ways of bringing communities and researchers together in transparent co-creation of ethical research to improve equity. As a cross-cutting theme, Dr. Dye has an emerging interest in island communities and jurisdictions that are presently or formerly enmeshed in colonial or territorial relationships to better understand the impact of international legal impacts on public health in such locations. Dr. Dye is an elected Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology, the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, the Society for Applied Anthropology, and is a Fellow and Chartered Geographer of the Royal Geographic Society.
