Profile bio

About Gloria Jimenez, Phd

I'm a climate scientist and catastrophe modeler and I've shaped my career around helping the insurance and financial services sectors meaningfully address the threats posed by climate change. I currently work at Moody's RMS as a Market & Product Specialist, where I partner with clients to find creative solutions that identify, quantify, and mitigate the effects of physical climate risk.I arrived at a career in the insurance industry by way of ten years of environmental science research experience (in government, academia, and consulting). I'm fascinated by the challenges of effectively using high-level scientific research to inform real-world objectives. Some examples: what do we actually know about global warming-induced changes in hurricane activity in the Atlantic Basin over the next 50 years and how should that change a primary insurer's view of risk? How can we scale long-term academic projections of change, with wide margins of uncertainty, to business-relevant timeframes and metrics? My academic work focused on using geochemical archives to understand past climates: M.S., using travertine deposits to time the activity of ancient oasis areas in Egypt's Western Desert, and Ph.D., investigating the he climate history of the Pacific Ocean using corals. I did lots of scientific programming for statistical and spatiotemporal data analysis and became an El Niño-Southern Oscillation enthusiast.

Listed skills include Environmental Science, Geology, Paleoclimate, Elemental Analysis, and 12 others.
