Profile bio

About Gloria Gonzalez

Since graduating from Syracuse University with a magazine journalism and political science degree, I have built a thriving career as an environmental and business journalist for more than 20 years for media organizations such as POLITICO, wire service BridgeNews, leading trade publisher Crain Communications and independent publisher Fulton Publications. All my relatives thought I was destined for a career in law, but I caught the journalism bug pretty early. My writing skills wowed one of my English teachers and at her suggestion, I joined John Jay High School’s student newspaper staff even though I knew nothing about journalism. But it became pretty obvious to me that journalism was my calling so I applied to some of the best journalism schools in the country. SU was my first choice so imagine my joy when I won a full tuition scholarship to attend the college I had my heart set on (sorry, University of Miami!). For the next four years, I spent my days trudging to classes through insane amounts of snow and wind – great preparation for my current job reporting on global warming – and many of my nights at The Daily Orange, SU's award-winning student newspaper. My career has taken me to places in the US and the rest of the world that I never thought I would go (and more than halfway toward my goal of visiting every US state and Canadian province). My trips to Montana to see the melting glaciers of Glacier National Park, to Florida to see the wonders of the Everglades, and to Texas to watch the wind industry hard at work developing much-needed renewable resources, brought crucial color to my day-to-day reporting on climate finance and its importance in mitigating the impact of climate change. Covering environmental justice issues is a particular passion of mine. I have written stories about Puerto Rico’s troubled energy grid and the connection between voting rights and support for climate action. But there are still many more stories that I hope to write and direct coverage of on this critical topic.

Listed skills include Journalism, Editing, Editorial, Research, and 21 others.
