You are dealing with human beings and a career counselor realizes a person is a holistic package and must be treated as such. Often there are the normal blocks we all, as humans, have when competing for something ("Am I good enough?", etc.). A good counselor can't be effectively involved and guide someone unless all impediments are addressed. People facing joblessness are often in personal and financial crisis. I think it's important for a counselor to know about community resources for free training, basic life needs, mental health therapy, etc. as well as industry trends, labor market fluctuations in a given region--and the basics of job search like networking and how to write a resume and interview. Most of all, a counselor has to care and have the energy of ten horses to motivate someone in his/her charge. A good career counselor is a personal cheerleader and guardian angel. He or she has to care about another's job search as if it were one's own.
