CoderDojo WA is a Western Australian branch of CoderDojo – a worldwide, open-source, volunteer-led movement oriented around providing free coding clubs (Dojos) for young people aged 7-17 (Ninjas). In a time when we are relying on computers and technology more than ever, we are facing a world-wide shortage of people with coding skills. By providing fun, free and social learning environments that motivate young people to get coding and collaborate with each other, we are setting them up to become creators, rather than consumers of technology. As a Dojo Mentor, I play a key role in helping young people aged 7-17 improve their digital literacy skills. In this volunteer role I: • Attend Dojo sessions• Attend and contribute to planning sessions with the Champions and Mentors at the Dojo• Use the ‘grandmother method’ to support learning at the Dojo. This involves providing admiration, support and encouragement for what the Ninjas are doing, and acknowledging their achievements• Help Ninjas think their way through problems towards solutions, rather than providing answers straight away• Provide points and advice for difficult problems that Ninjas are stuck on• Suggest activities, projects and online tutorials that Ninjas can attempt, when they are not sure what to do• Steer Ninjas towards productive coding activities if they are getting off-track• Encourage Ninjas to enter coding competitions and work on code-related projects• Chat informally with Ninjas and show interest in their hobbies• Try to learn something new at each Dojo session in order to model proactive learning behaviour for Ninjas• Assist the Champions with general tasks at our Dojo
