My work included diverse set of activities: • IoT Technology evangelism and community engagement• Creation of IoT technology testbeds and making them accessible to third parties• Technology focused accelerator programmes for startups and scaleups• Digital transformation project for local authorities and corporate clients, including IoT strategy, proof of concepts and pilots• Establishing strategic partnerships with key industry organisation• R&D on IoT technology building blocks that enable a wider ecosystem• IoT technology benchmarking
Lead Technologist (Iot)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is an important enabler for digitizing our economy and will have a significant impact in many industry sectors. As lead technologist for IoT, I was responsible for setting the technical agenda of Digital Catapult’s involvement in this fast growing technology domain, by understanding areas of opportunities for UK businesses in adopting IoT solutions and the technical and market barriers they are facing. I created a number of national innovation support programmes for LPWAN technologies such as Things Connected and large scale International IoT pilots for Smart Cities such as SynchroniCity.
Technology Strategist, Principle Investigator
Intel Collaborative Research Institute on Sustainable and Connected Cities. See: http://www.cities.io/I was part of the IoT system research group of Intel Labs Europe based in the ICRI Cities in London, where I worked as a technology strategist alongside other ICRI researchers to identify synergies among ICRI research and opportunities for their potential exploitation within Intel Labs. I was responsible for building new European research initiatives of strategic importance to our team and help shaping the ICRI Cities research agenda. My work also included driving technical contributions in on-going research projects. I was a principle investigator for Intel Labs on two EU projects. The FP7 ICT WISDOM project explores the use of the Internet of Things and advanced analytics in the water domain for demand optimised management of the water network. In the H2020 OrganiCity project we are establishing a large scale living lab environment across three European cities for collaborative city making.
Senior Research Fellow
I returned to CCSR to take up the role of Technical Manager for the EU FP7 SENSEI project (15Mio Euro funding, 20+ partners) and to lead experimental Internet of Things (IoT) research activities in the centre. I set up the SmartCampus environment, an experimental research facility for the IoT at our University and acted as chief architect of SmartSantander, Europe's largest experimental research facility for IoT and SmartCities. During my time, I secured over 5 Mio Euro of funding for IoT research and helped CCSR to establish an International reputation for research in the field. Examples of FP7 EU projects that I helped establishing are IoT-A, SmartSantander, i-CORE, IoT-i, PROBE-IT, OUTSMART, IoT Lab, CityPulse and SOCIOTAL. Examples of UK national projects are REDUCE (EPSRC) and EYEHUB (TSB).I acted as principle and co-investigator on various UK national and EU research projects on Smart City and Smart Energy. I was resonsible for the line management of 3 PostDoc researchers and supervised 5 PhD students and various MSc student projects. I was nominated as an EU expert for two International expert groups on the IoT, acted as member of the Future Internet Research and Experimentation (FIRE) Architecture Board and Fututere Internet Assembly (FIA) steering committe. I received the ID People Limelight Award 2013 for my successful management of the FP7 ICT SENSEI project.
Researcher (Senior Engineer)
I worked as a Senior Research Engineer at the Ericson Ireland Research Centre (EIRC), helping to pioneer a now important research and emerging business area for Ericsson on Machine to Machine Communications (M2M) and Internet of Things. I lead the architecture work package of the EU FP7 SENSEI project and worked on Ericsson internal research projects, resulting in 4 invention disclosures and several peer-reviewed publications.
Research Fellow
My first exposure to EU research and to research proposal writing as PostDoc. As part of the FP6 e-SENSE project I worked on technology enablers for mobile context awareness by integrating wireless sensor networks into service platforms of Beyond 3G communication systems. I lead the architecture work package of the e-SENSE project and supervised MSc student projects. I also successfully secured the FP7 ICT SENSEI project (15Mio funding, 20+ partners) which was one of the biggest Internet of Things EU projects in Europe. This established the foundations for further IoT research activities at CCSR.
