Staff Site Reliability Engineer
Staff Site Reliability Engineer
Lead Site Reliability Engineer
Lead a team of 8+ engineers in a cross-functional effort to migrate a large monolithic application to the cloud. Developed and executed on a multi-quarter project plan to incrementally achieve the migration. Defined telemetry and metrics to gauge success at each step, and made this information available to stakeholders. Acted as subject matter expert when communicating about this project to engineering.Continued refining the incident response process for all of Fitbit. I was responsible for running many of the post-incident review meetings, and training engineers how to run these meetings themselves. Helped lead an SRE organizational effort to evangelize reliability as a feature for all our products, internal and external.Member of an internal design review board tasked with reviewing new technology and architecture designs and providing feedback.
Senior Site Reliability Engineer
Leading efforts to reduce complexity and confusion around legacy code deployments and monitoring. Simplified reporting around the viability of an ongoing code deployment. Improved teams' ability to identify regressions during 'canary' deployments with automation and tooling. Reduced detection time of issues uncaught in non-prod environments to < 30m.Implemented blameless incident review process to help teams learn from incidents, and prioritize remediations. Worked with teams to help them understand the reliability metrics that need to be measured and reported on regularly for their individual services.Formalized change management to enable teams track production changes in their various states, and provide context about the holistic state of the system. The goal is to quickly allow teams to answer the question, "What has recently changed, or will be changing soon", when making decisions about their products.Developed custom tooling around configuration management tools and internal CMDB to allow puppet execution to take into account meta-data about the host in which it was executing. This allowed teams to better track the state of config management tools on their system, and any logging about recent changes to the state of execution.Key member of several cross-functional teams formed to address performance and reliability issues across our products.
Senior Site Reliability Engineer
Originally hired as one of the first members "Global SRE" team, I had exposure to all the core infrastructure components which allow Twitter's systems to function (LDAP, config management, DNS, etc). Primary responsibilities included: Break-fix, hardware re/decomm, deployments, internal engineer support. After a SRE re-org I became embedded with the Developer Productivity/Engineering Effectiveness team on making sure Twitter's engineers can reliably write, test, build, and deploy their code. Within this organization I was also part of a smaller team whose main focus was Git. During my time on this team I have become something of a Git expert. I took the Git service from a misunderstood unreliable mess, to a scalable, fault tolerant, production service (complete with SLA's!).In addition to Git, I had an opportunity to work with many internal teams, and help them use our tools more efficiently, or find ways to make our tooling work better for them. I was responsible for making sure all the tools/services were HA and could live in any of our data centers. The teams and technologies I've been exposed to are too varied to list here, but Twitter was one of the most interesting places I have worked.Key Technologies: Git, Apache, Artifactory, Jenkins, Puppet, BIND, LDAP, Varnish, Reviewboard, Subversion
Senior Operations Engineer
Senior member of a small operations team overseeing the reliability and operability of the production website, and backend systems. Personally lead the project to convert from bare metal to virtualized (VMWare/VSphere) deployments. This resulted in a drastic reduction in DC requirements as well as simplifying overall system configurations. During this transition, I was also migrating all systems from the legacy CFEngine configuration management system, into Chef. Project lead for improving monitoring reliability, and reducing monitoring latency. This work primarily included performance tweaks and configuration changes for Nagios and Graphite. Redesigned LDAP and DNS infrastructure, reducing overall system count, and operational complexity. In addition to the projects that I drove, listed above, I was also responsible for all other core services and infrastructure required to keep the site up. Load balancers, several petabytes of SAN storage (Polyserv, IBRIX, EVA, NetApp, etc), network switches, etc were all within the scope of my team's support.
Senior Systems Adminstrator
Solaris Administrator for a large online video sharing website. Key responsibilities include: maintaining site uptime, server and software configuration and installation, server and software patching and maintenance, data center resource monitoring and growth planning, vendor relationship management. Apart from maintaining all systems and software that run the website, I am also responsible for all development and staging environments. Management of the corporate network and phone system also falls under my responsibility. There is also a farm of Mac OS X systems which I am lead engineer on, manage image deployments, software rollouts, and scheduled upgrades and maintenance.Key Technologies: Solaris/Solaris Zones, Apache, Zeus Load Balancers, SUN/Oracle Hardware, BIND, Ruby on Rails, LDAP, Jumpstart, DeployStudio.
Systems Adminstrator
Installed, configured and maintained all servers and systems required for production website. Responsible for 24x7 support and troubleshooting of all systems. Introduced centralized installation services into their environment for fast reliable system roll-outs. Also responsible for tracking and monitoring system backups, and facilitating data restoration. Created a virtualized test environment to allow a greater amount of test platforms on less hardware.
Data Systems Engineer
General Unix/Linux administrator. Managed all hosted services servers with operating systems and software including: Solaris, Windows 2000 Server, FreeBSD, Debian, Sendmail, Postfix, BIND, Apache, Tomcat, ProFTPd, Veritas Netbackup, Veritas Storage Foundation Suite. Assisted in managing an enterprise data center (provisioning deprovisioning cabinets/cages, network management, etc). Helped create an automated end to end provisioning system for all hosted services (email, dns, web hosting, etc).
