Experienced geographic information systems (GIS) analyst in B.C.'s Natural Resource Ministries, where I've spent the past 4.5 years. Started as a GIS technician with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations & Rural Development (FLNRORD) in Nelson, most recently as an Invertebrates GIS analyst with the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy.Strengths: Python, Oracle SQL, QGIS, R, GitHub, open-source GIS approachesAfter earning my Advanced Diploma in GIS (Honours) from Selkirk College in 2017, I've gained valuable experience crafting GIS analyses to meet diverse business needs for the Kootenay-Boundary Region. My work at FLNRORD in Nelson involved Python scripting for geoprocessing workflows, such as timber volume analysis, harvest extraction, beetle susceptibility and spatial data maintenance and updates. I've explored and developed open source spatial tools to broaden public access to meaningful overlay analysis resultants of B.C. government data. I've created scripts to examine old growth harvest patterns across the region, using best available data for ecosystem characteristics, wildfire perimeters and forest license types. I've compared free-to-grow (FTG) blocks from provincial RESULTS OPENINGS data with FTG estimates derived from LiDAR datasets. My goal is to develop as a geographic information systems (GIS) specialist with general knowledge of spatial data analysis and specific expertise in open source harvest extraction tools. Other areas of GIS interest include raster processing Python packages, GDAL/OGR filtering and data transformation, web mapping (ArcGIS Online, Google, Carto) and cartographic design. My GIS skillset complements my existing skillset in journalism, reporting, photography, newspaper layout and design.

Geospatial AnalystB.C. Ministry Of Environment And Climate Change Strategy Feb 2021 - Mar 2022Nelson, British Columbia, CanadaGathered data from authoritative and citizen science sources; created layout maps for element occurrences of threatened invertebrate species, modelled suitable habitat for threatened gastropods, creating data from from non-spatial files via georeferencing, cleaned and compiled data from academic datasets over several decades.Key achievements:Created comprehensive inventory of 25,000+ western bumblebee observations in western North America, and what land cover types they were found in, as part of a threats assessment project. Generated spatial data from string datasets using Google Maps geocoder. Coordinated successful field data collection for 7 staff in summer 2021 using QGIS tools (Input and Mergin). Modelled habitat for four slug species on Vancouver Island and in the Kootenays to determine future survey sites.

Gis TechnicianMinistry Of Forests, Lands And Natural Resource Operations Sep 2017 - Feb 2021Nelson B.C.Geospatial project design, conversion of tabular data (.csv, Excel) to spatial files, creating Python script tools in ArcMap, creating QGIS Python scripts (PyQGIS), habitat suitability analysis, open source geospatial tool development, marginal timber identification in Timber Supply Areas (TSAs).Key achievements:Identified timber at risk from wildfire and beetle infestation in FLNRORD's Kootenay-Boundary region.Participated in a TEAMS deployment in 2018 doing GIS wildfire mapping at the Southeast Fire Centre.Annually updated and applied topology corrections for licensee operating areas. Spatially located marginal timber for amended harvest licenses. Modelled forest fertilization potential for carbon sequestration. -
Invasive Species Database Specialist (Range Branch)Ministry Of Forests, Lands And Natural Resource Operations Apr 2020 - Sep 2020Nelson, British Columbia, CanadaMaintained and updated Invasive Alien Plant Program (IAPP) database, authorizing IAPP users and privilege levels using the ADAM authorization system, modelling biocontrol habitat factors.Key achievements:Created an automated analysis (via chained Python scripts) of biocontrol invasive plant treatment and monitoring in B.C. (replaced a previous workflow based on Excel file downloads and manual editing). Found correlations between biocontrol success and habitat factors such as elevation, slope, aspect and soil type. Classified invasive plant sites by First Nation consultation area (using python and pandas) -
