PhD student in Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE) at the University of Naples Federico II. My PhD research activity is co-financed by TSD-space, an Italian company delivering high-performing onboard and ground electronic equipment and imagers for space applications. The research focuses on neural networks (NNs) hardware deployment onboard spacecraft for image processing applications. The deployment of NNs on board satellites poses a significant challenge due to the high computational demands and memory requirements of NNs inference. To enable inference on the edge, it is essential to optimize the network by reducing its complexity while maximizing power efficiency and throughput and minimizing resource utilization. Currently, I’m designing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based super-resolution algorithm for satellite imagery. The research focuses on the design of a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the remote sensing image resolution and quality enhancement. The algorithm is tailored to a novel earth observation imager for very small satellites, such as CubeSats, based on anacquisition mode that uses a quincunx sampling scheme. I’m studying how to optimize the model in order to deploy the network on board small spacecraft, enabling real-time super-resolution processing. The main objective is to find solutions to increase the quality and resolution of the images acquired by small satellites. These are, typically, characterized by limited spatial resolution due to the mass and volume constraints which result in a limited focal length.Main Activities:- AI-based algorithms design for image processing in space applications, with focus on Deep Learning- AI-based algorithms HW acceleration.- AI-based algorithms deployment.
