During my tenure at a State Correctional Institution, during the 80'; there was a lack of modern work benifits. The ability to go before legislative hearings was an honor but yet with consequences from my certain superiors. However, having staff to inmate ratio was paramount. Salaries, time off, uniforms etc. Staff to inmates the most vital for their health, well being and lives. The system cannot run "effectively, efficiently without the balance of players i.e., staff to whom we look after. Cutting corners, budget for "others" is illogical. Especially since end of year revenue reviews paid out more $$$ as opposed to hiring more staff! The numbers don't lie. Taking these facts to legislation begot us our earned budgets. Since 2002 employed at Head Injury Association, 300 Kennedy Drive, Hauppauge, NY. During this time providing the services and supportive assistance as required through New York State Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) and New York State Department of Health (DOH).Note that while in their home or in the community supportive assistance warranted specific strategies and techniques for specific behavioral and or physical issues to ensure their safety and well being during threatening behaviors*, seizures, accidents with quick remedial support. Incorporating specific strategies of calming techniques minimize the aggression characteristics, i.e., inappropriate behaviorism, yelling, throwing objects, threatening body posture, destructive actions verbally or physical. Staff provided techniques and strategies deflecting and redirecting manipulative behaviors utilizing a calming voice, active listening, agreeing dialog, verbal encouragements providing calming, safe and secure atmosphere. While working Community Habilitation staff sometimes conferred with new perspective members and their families for the 'community intervention transitional period' with opportunities the Head Injury organization had to offer. Staff provided an agreeable dialog of a “home away from home” to differ parental/guardian and perspective member of any worries or anxieties. Staff provided reassurance/support for the transitional period accomplished with patience, empathy and counseling to new members and families reassuring smooth, secure, happy transitioning into our program with our caring, educated and experienced staff.
