Treating the mind and the bodyAs a student at the American University in Beirut in the 1980’s my eyes were opened to the physical and emotional suffering of others. As a psychiatric trainee in Syracuse NY I studied with people of different convictions including Dr. Thomas Szasz who taught me to challenge established views. In Rochester NY, the city where George Engel and John Romano developed their biopsychosocial model, I became an advocate of whole person medicine.Clinician and educatorMy clinical settings included inpatient, forensic and Emergency rooms.I have also worked with other medical colleagues as a psychiatric consultant and collaborator.As a teacher I received several recognitions including the Christopher H. Hodgman award for medical education by the University of Rochester School of Medicine, and the Nancy C. A. Roeske Certificate of Recognition in Medical Student Education by the American Psychiatric Association.Lifelong LearningThroughout my career I have strived to acquire new skills. I obtained Board certifications from the American Board of Medical Specialties in General Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine. After 20 years as a psychiatrist I enrolled in the executive MBA program at the Simon School of Business. I received my MBA in 2013.Multicultural fluencyI received my childhood education from the Marist Friars' School in Lebanon. During the Lebanese war, I enrolled in the old military Dominican school at Sorѐze, France for 2 years before returning to Lebanon and joining the American University of Beirut.Proven leadership skillsI learned early on that my passion for my work inspires others to be as passionate. My experiences as chief resident, medical director, then president of Unity Health System medical staff built a track record of effective leadership. As an MBA student, I studied some of the theories of leadership which added to my experiences and skills.
