About Gareth Parkes

I lead the data journey at Sir Robert McAlpine. This will see us provide insights for people to make better use of their own judgement and experience; re-engineer processes to increase efficiency and productivity; and demonstrate new ways of collaborative working. I connect people, innovate, troubleshoot, problem-solve, appreciate experience and advocate for change. I'm intensely curious, and a firm believer in the power of collaboration and empowering people. I am optimistic for the future. Having been slow to embrace the value of data, the construction industry is now being remodelled by new digital techniques and use of data. Hidden within the oceans of data created on building sites across the country lie new ways of working that will be real drivers of sustainable economic growth, elimination of harm and overcoming the climate and nature emergencies. I marshal resources to unlock these new ways of working. Sir Robert McAlpine is leading the charge when it comes to embracing data, typified by its regular participation in Project:Hack events, which see teams use data to find new ways of doing things better. To really see permanent, wholesale change across the sector, we must encourage collaboration between companies. Data hoarding should be totally incongruous in an industry that relies so much on-site collaboration across the supply chain. I am delivering SRM's data strategy, establishing the Construction Data Trust, and enabling project data analytics; creating a new profession of Project Data Analysts. I studied Chemical Process Engineering at Nottingham and Economics & Policy of Energy & the Environment at UCL before finding a career in digital change, innovation and business improvement. For 8 years I worked at the Energy Institute, where I set up and ran their Knowledge Service, set up the digital team and created the Energy Barometer – a tool that's still tapping into the pulse of the energy profession.
