Urban Field Studio provides urban design services for early idea formation. Partners Jane Lin and Heidi Sokolowsky approach the urban condition with a particular concern for the public realm and human interaction. We provide a full range of urban design services with an emphasis on strategy and design, visual communication with the public, and education about the role of urban design.

Teaching architecture to students in K-8 school programs in the San Francisco Bay Area through LEAP Arts in Education (leaparts.org). The projects and programs I develop encourage design thinking, the practice of arts, and the application of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) skills. I document the lessons I teach on my blog, Learning from Cities.

Founded and created Mama Tong - a Chinese soup company specializing in classic Chinese home remedies, especially for zuo yuezi. Mama Tong means "mother's soup" in mandarin. Worked as a CA licensed architect specializing in urban design. Provided strategies for redevelopment to the cities of Fremont, Anaheim, Belmont, San Jose, Long Beach, Milpitas, and Santa Clara through reports, presentations to City Council, and public meetings. Worked with private developers planning retail environments, testing the capacity of sites for new development, and exploring potential sustainable strategies.

Taught 7 semesters, three semesters as Head GSI for the courses of Environmental Design 1 (Professor Hester) and Environmental Design 4 (Professor Martin), and Architecture 140 Energy and the Environment (Professors Brager and Benton). Consulted to the general public and building professionals about energy efficiency at this public resource. Supported classes about energy efficiency for buildings and helped architects and engineers use the tools that were available at the center.

Planned and designed buildings for the University of Nottingham, Malaysia competition. The proposal featured sensitivity to the site, tropical climate, and Islamic culture and was the runner-up in this public competition.

Designed façade improvements for retail in the City of Oakland under CEDA’s Façade Improvement Program. Evaluated sites and prepared CAD-documents for over twenty telecommunication projects. Prepared construction documents for a 25,000 sf datacenter and office building in San Diego.
