Principal Investigator on a 3-year $1.4MM U.S. Department of Energy SBIR grant. Lead a team of 12 engineers, consultants and interns as we prototyped drone-based AI to rapidly assess distribution line damage after storms. The project culminated in the commercialization of several multi-sensor payloads that provide real-time data collection and curation onboard drones.

Goksel specializes in helping retail clients find efficiencies by adding AI to their workflows. In addition to consulting, he formulates solutions for next-gen products and applications. His Lab has the unique combination of hardware, software, and cybersecurity expertise to help you sprint from visionary idea to marketable product.

Goksel is probably best known for TI's Vision Library (VLIB) that he personally crafted after interviewing dozens of OEMs about their embedded vision acceleration needs. Goksel also designed a DSP-optimized software library to remove the fish-eye lens effects on automotive rear-view cameras. This solution was widely adopted by automotive and appliance manufacturers in Japan, Europe, Korea, and China.In 2010, Goksel lead a team of engineers at TI's renowned Kilby Research Labs, where they prototyped an interactive projector that resulted in numerous patents for 3D depth perception.

Research Focus: Computer Vision - Face HallucinationUnder Dr. Takeo Kanade, Goksel designed and demonstrated novel algorithms for accurately analyzing low-resolution imagery, achieving significant improvement over state-of-the-art visual trackers. He synthesized an illumination compensation approach for appearance-based models, enabling them to perform under novel lighting conditions. His work culminated in a dissertation on the super-resolution enhancement of human face videos using space-time features to resolve ambiguities and enforce smoothness.Research Focus: Computer Vision - Medical RoboticsGoksel designed rigid and non-rigid image registration algorithms for monitoring skin lesions over time.

Project: Real-time Vision and Modeling for Traffic SignageGoksel prototyped software solutions that leveraged high resolution template images of known traffic signs to track and recognize those signs in low resolution videos.

Project: Pheromone RoboticsAt HRL, Goksel designed and performed experiments with a team of simple robots that communicated with each other via infrared lamps and sensors (also known as "digital pheromones") mimicking the collective behaviors of ant colonies.

Research Focus: Mobile RoboticsGoksel designed, implemented, and demonstrated fully autonomous navigation and collaborative mapping using a team of "Urbie" and Pioneer robots. He successfully generated real-world topological maps of indoor environments for DARPA's Tactical Mobile Robotics program. He also developed and lead field-testing of mobile robot control software that used differential GPS to enable a heterogeneous group of ground robots to perform cooperative tasks with an unmanned air vehicle.
