I look forward to a long term goal of someday returning to our home-state of South Dakota to work with the local food movement in my home state. We recently took one step closer to our long term vision with the purchase of a small farmstead in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We are now working to develop the site into an inter-generational regenerative demonstration and education site and nursery.

Portland, Oregon Area

I work with faculty and students in the Biology and Environmental Studies programs at Reed College to manage academic events, support academic coursework and to promote student engagement and success. In order to develop learning opportunities for students and faculty, I develop relationships and collaborate with alumni and departments across campus, and collaborate to plan department programing and events.I plan regular events including speaker series and initiate new events including community building events, resource fairs, skill building workshops, and alumni panels. I also coordinate department programs & processes including research and grant programs, qualifying exams, as well as facilitating department communications.

Reed College, Portland, Or

Reed College's Science Outreach program provides high quality, inquiry-based, hands-on science education to over 500 elementary students in the Portland metro every year. As coordinator of the program I developed, coordinated (and sometimes taught) the program's science lessons, including classroom activities and field trips, for 3rd-7th grade partner classrooms.The program's curriculum is developed in collaboration with Reed & Portland Public School faculty. The curriculum includes age appropriate, standards-based, inquiry based lessons on biology, chemistry, physics, & earth science-based topics.To implement the program I recruited, trained, supervised & supported 40-50 Reed student teachers annually. I maintained communication between the college, Reed students, public school teachers & administrators, coordinated scheduling, transportation, & material support, oversaw budgets, maintained records & website, and prepared grants proposals & annual reports.

As an environmental educator, I led environmental education & science lessons, activities, field trips and summer camps at the schools, levels pre-K to 12, within the WLWV school district (including field trips, gardening education and work projects at the CREST farm and school gardens.) I developed new & improved existing curriculum.I also worked with teachers & students to further district’s sustainability initiative by providing resources for teachers, maintaining the district’s sustainability blog, planning sustainability field trips & lessons, & coordinating a district-wide sustainability showcase event.

I mapped & recorded stream conditions & assessed the quality of habitat for wildlife.

Portland, Oregon

I taught elementary & middle school students inquiry-based science lessons through classroom activities and outdoor field trips. I also helped to develop curriculum & assisted with material preparation, recruitment, training & support of Reed College student teachers.

Jungbong, Korea

Received a Betty Liu Fellowship to conduct field research on the oriental fire-bellied toad (Bombina orientalis) in South Korea. Included working at a remote field site & collecting DNA samples from sites across northeastern South Korea.

Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Gamboa, Panama

Helped to conduct field experiments & performed monitoring to investigate predation ecology of red-eyed treefrogs (Agalycnis calidryas). Conducted independent research on the effects of habitat structure on the behavior & predation success of giant water beetles.

Rapid City, Sd

Surveyed the Black Hills National Forest for historic artifacts & sites. Used GPS to create site maps. Excavated & tested rock shelters for evidence of prehistoric artifacts. (Summers only)
