Mr. Ivanis is an Environmental Scientist with EcoMetrix Incorporated. He has almost a decade of relevant experience primarily on large industrial projects. His expertise is in molecular biology, modeling, environmental risk assessment and toxicology of heavy metals. Mr. Ivanis worked on a research project for Dr. R. Playle at Wilfrid Laurier University, where he investigated the role of dissolved organic carbon in heavy metal toxicity and bioavailability to fish. He used various metal gill-binding models and biotic ligand models to predict metal toxicity to aquatic organisms. Recently, his career has focused on the risk assessments projects in mining industry. These projects involved use of complex mathematical contaminant transport models to predict the fate of metals and radionuclides in lakes, rivers and biota. He has gained extensive training and experience in contaminant pathway modeling using IMPACT (Integrated Model for Probabilistic Assessment of Contaminant Transport). IMPACT is a numerical model developed by EcoMetrix and is considered a Canadian standard for derivation of release limits from nuclear reactors. Modeling exercises required extensive review and analysis of decades of environmental monitoring data to accurately quantify the transport of metals and radionuclides through terrestrial and aquatic pathways. Recently Mr. Ivanis participated as a professional consultant at the International Atomic Energy Agency information and technology exchange workshop. His technical modeling expertise was used to identify sensitivity and uncertainty of input parameters used for assessment of radiological dose to humans as a result of routine discharges from nuclear facilities. Mr. Ivanis provided IMPACT model training to other members of the working group and also learned three other software packages (CROM 7, SYMBIOSE and SU_MMC) currently used in nuclear industry.
