Gordon G. Martin is the inaugural Director of the James C. Kennemer Center for Innovation and Social Impact in the Honors College at The University of Alabama. The Center’s goal is to be a hub for innovation on the campus of the University of Alabama, to be a catalyst for innovation and social impact at institutions of higher education around the state, and to foster state and local efforts throughout the state, aided by corporate, foundation, and government support. The Center's signature program is the BIG Ideas Contest, an entry-level program that encourages students who have limited or no competition experience to develop their ideas, transform their thinking and address societal problems through creativity and ingenuity. Advising, mentoring and workshops are integral parts of the program, along with funding and recognition. Gordon also serves as an Operating Partner at Redmont Capital, a private investment bank providing confidential, candid, financial and strategic advice. Gordon worked for Alabama Power Company (APC) and Southern Company for 28 years, serving as APC's Senior Vice President of Corporate and Administrative Services, where he had responsibility for Facilities Services, Fleet Services, Meeting and Event Services, and Corporate Real Estate. Gordon was also responsible for Corporate Security, Business Assurance, and Information Technology.Gordon served for eight years as the APC's General Counsel as well as seven years as its Division Vice President in Montgomery. He has held management positions in Generation Planning and Development, Fuels, and External Affairs. He also served as the company’s lead government affairs representative in Washington, D.C. Before joining Alabama Power, Gordon was a legislative lawyer with Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells), one of Washington D.C.’s largest law firms, and a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Howell Heflin and the U.S. Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Courts.Gordon's current civic and charitable board service includes the A+ Education Partnership (Chair), The University of Alabama's Blackburn Institute (past chair), Rotary Club of Birmingham (past president), the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (past chair), Leadership Alabama (past chair), Friends of Alabama Heritage (chair), and Alabama Archives and History Foundation (executive committee). Gordon previously served as chair of the boards of PARCA, The American Village College, McWane Science Center, Montgomery Chamber of Commerce, and the Montgomery Riverfront Development Foundation. He also chaired the United Way campaign.
