About Gordon Macdonald

I am an analytical chemist currently working in the semiconductor manufacturing equipment industry where I work directly with R&D groups at the worlds largest logic and memory chip manufacturing companies both to support current high-volume manufacturing and enable future technology nodes. In my graduate I focused on understanding how the nanoscale electrical properties of thin-film materials relevant to emerging photovoltaic technologies impacts the macroscale material properties and photovoltaic performance of photovoltaic devices. After completing my PhD in Analytical Chemistry (2015) at the University of Arizona I moved to Boulder Colorado to begin my National Research Council (NRC) postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) before joining Lam Research (2017).At my current position, I have worked closely with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to study the relationship between the local electrical properties of high performance polycrystalline organic-inorganic perovskite solar cell materials and the photovoltaic performance of completed devices with a focus on the impacts of grain boundaries.During my current and previous work, I have gained extensive knowledge of nanoscale and surface chemistry techniques including a variety of scanning probe microscopy techniques, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electrochemistry, photoemission and optical spectroscopies. I have also gained expertise in a number of fabrication techniques including magnetron sputtering, physical vapor deposition, and solution casting of thin-films of metal and semiconductive materials and have used computer programing to aid in collection and analysis of large datasets.
