I joined them as a Lorry Driver and was promoted to Supervisor in the first 3 days. Six months later I was promoted to Daily Mail Logistics & Warehouse Manager.Duties included – Organizing cover seven nights a week ensuring the 14 contracted Lorries per night were on site on time. Scheduling deliveries delivering live news Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and weekend supplements to wholesalers in London and Home counties. Ensuring full compliance with tachograph and rest regulations, health and safety and driving and delivering. Arranging holiday, absence cover, and payroll and HR functions.On winning the inserting business which involved the inserting of the Sunday supplements packing and distributing them to wholesale from Thursday to Saturday. Duties included preparing the warehouse for the manual inserting with 3 x 8 hour shifts 60 people per shift over 3 days. Planning the loads, delivery schedule and vehicles, health and safety and HR functions this ended in 1998. In 1998 we were approached to work out a secret plan to distribute a free newspaper to all London underground stations and some key over ground stations in London. I was given the task to visit every location, arrange the rack locations, plan the routes, employ the 70 staff and train them ready for launch. This was successful and on launch we distributed 250,000 copies to over 300 locations per day problem free. Within 2 months the distribution figure increased to 320,000 copies and continues to grow in supply and pagination.
