Gordon was the Principal at Riddlesdown Collegiate from 2006 to 2015. He led a major restructuring of the school into its small schools model, oversaw £6million of capital investment, led the conversion first from VA status to Trust and then to Academy status, and most importantly raised standards at GCSE and A Level. The school has maintained its specialism in Science, complementing this with the development of high quality work in the Arts through the Creative and Performing Arts College housed in the £4million arts centre, The @RC; alongside all of this the Collegiate developed under Gordon's leadership one of the largest programmes of Classics / Latin / Ancient Greek across the country in the state or independent sectors. Riddlesdown Collegiate Academy Trust (since renamed The Collegiate trust) has now been approved as a sponsor of other academies. As CEO of this Trust, Gordon will work with other academies to share the successes of the Collegiate. Gordon is currently Chair of Governors at Croydon College, which is a merger of the previous Croydon College and Coulsdon Sixth Form College.Riddlesdown Collegiate is the largest school in Croyon and converted to Academy Status on 1st June 2012. As a practical demonstration of "small schools" within a large organisation there are few more interesting or effective places to consider. The small schools, known here as Colleges, have their own teams of teachers and support staff, headed up by a Headteacher.The role of the Principal at the Collegiate is to ensure all of the Colleges work collaboratively yet competitively, developing outstanding practice. Leading a team of over 200 teaching and support staff, with a budget of £10million annually, this is a complex strategic role.
