Greenwatts Systems exists to provide an optimum engineering solution for property owners, farmers, community groups and other interested parties who wish to invest in 'renewable' energy. Upon visiting the site and gleaning the appropriate information, we provide potential customers with a concise report indicating the most appropriate and lucrative technology. I taught the fundamentals of Electrical Power Engineering and Lighting Design to third year BEng(Hons) and MEng(Hons) students on the Architectural Engineering programme at Heriot Watt University. There is lots of interesting electrical infrastructure on site at Riccarton campus, and accordingly, I organised a site visit with the students and the Electrical Engineer employed by Heriot-Watt University to maintain this infrastructure.

I was responsible for teaching and assessing Mathematics and Physics courses, to prepare students who wanted to study for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degree courses at UK Universities; but needed to enhance their education in Physics and Mathematics first.I was also responsible for mentoring students and assessing a project module, where students picked a topic and wrote a short academic article.

Fisher Electrical Consulting was a research led Consulting Engineering Practice. We worked in partnership with other small practices and as sub-consultants to a number of larger consulting engineers. Our customers were mostly based in London, the English Midlands and central Scotland. We often rented office accommodation close to our customers for maximum client convenience.

Derry Building Services (DBS) had established a 'long term purchasing agreement' with a main contracting company to provide multiple new schools. There was high profile concern within DBS that a premium service was provided for the first four projects. I was recruited to take over from the Electrical Design Manager, as the first point of contact and 'relationship manager' with the main contractor, the client and the end users. In this incarnation, I reported directly to the Managing Director of DBS and my remit included 'troubleshooting' and detailed on site co-ordination with DBS trade subcontractors on site, and design development with our customer's 'in house' engineers. This client produced a set of design intent drawings and specifications. This set of information was of a level of detail that a consulting electrical engineer might produce at Royal Institution of British Architect (RIBA) Stage D/E; now of course, RIBA stage 3 - 4. The drawings required further detailing to provide production information for our contracts engineers to place orders and for our site operatives to use for construction. We offered workshops and went through an iterative review/approval process with the client's engineers, to further detail the drawings and specifications.

My role involved the design and delivery of power, lighting, fire alarm, security and public address systems for a range of clients including museums, schools, sports centres and community buildings. An integral part of this role was the on-site monitoring of progress in order to maintain the adherence to the original design intent.

Similarly to my later position at Buro Happold, I worked on the design of a wide range of projects for the electrical systems of offices, factories and recording studios.

This part of the Rolls-Royce group provided diesel engines and steam turbines for industrial power and pumping applications. I worked in a number of different departments throughout the business including spares, purchasing, project management, applications and development. A particular interest in commissioning and project management stemmed from extended placements in these fields, including some time spent on overseas projects.
