The Lunaticks Society of Newcastle is an incorporated, not for profit association dedicated to building a strong digital culture in the city of Newcastle – inspiring creativity, new thinking and ideas in the digital age. The Society is named after an informal society of prominent industrialists, natural philosophers and intellectuals, who met regularly between 1765 and 1813 in Birmingham, England to debate the new thinking of the industrial revolution called the ‘Lunar Society of Birmingham.

See Change: Steel to Silicon will tell the story of the Newcastle’s evolution from a “Steel City” to a digital and creative hub. This is a process that is already underway and is rapidly collecting momentum.This project will capture poignant examples of how the local economy is changing from one driven by steel, coal and industry to one that is being built through creativity and innovation within the digital sphere. This documentary will reflect these stories in an engaging and thought provoking way, delivering content across multiple platforms and establishing “food for thought” as to how regional cities, and indeed Australia, can economic leaders in the age of information.The story of See Change: Steel to Silicon is built upon is the notion of a “Creative Economy”. This refers to a self-sustaining market made up primarily of digital technologies trading in creativity, innovation, knowledge and information (these include the film, gaming, animation and interactive industries), as well as the greater financial and cultural implications for the socio-political landscape in which it is set.This project aims to portray all of these processes in a way that captures their potential for synergy, ultimately delivering the primary message that all these individual groups and organizations hold to be true – that Newcastle and the surround Hunter Region can become a sustainable national economic hub for digital and creative innovation.Email me if you want to know more about this project.
