Basic training at Bassingbourne Barracks. First tour of duty was Germany [1984] and my main duties for the mechanised battalion were; maintenance of vehicles, fitness training, rifle training and 432 armoured personnel carrier driving. I took part in many live firing exercises across Germany and Canada. During my time in Germany I exchanged with personnel in Denmark to study how the Denmark armed Forces operated. On 10 November 1986 I started my second tour, which was in Northern Ireland, and I was based at North Howard Street Mill, Belfast. My role in Northern Ireland was to reinforce the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary]. On a day-to-day basis I operated vehicle searches and conducted foot patrols around Belfast.
