Govarthenan is a data science enthusiast, following a B.Sc. in Information Systems program at the University of Colombo School of Computing, and working part-time as a data scientist at DreamSpace Academy. In the past few years, Govarthenan’s work in recent years mainly focused on using advanced NLP techniques to identify hate speech in native languages (Tamil, Sinhala) and their transliterated counterparts (Thanglish, Singlish) found on online social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. He has given considerable attention to ensuring the AI systems were impartial to various ethnic, religious, and politically aligned groups. Recently he talked about algorithmic bias in NLP systems and ways to mitigate it in the 2024 Asia-Pacific Peace Research Association (APPRA) Conference at Harmony Centre, University of Vavuniya. He is passionate about ensuring that AI technologies are developed and deployed responsibly for the betterment of humanity, with consideration for diverse global contexts.

Technical LeadDreamspace Academy Apr 2022 - Feb 2023Batticaloa, Eastern Province, Sri LankaManaged the development of an 'AI-based digital hate speech detector' on behalf of DreamSpace Academy.The goal of the model is to detect Tamil, Tanglish, and English hate speech found on social media platforms that are popular in Sri Lanka. The development of the AI framework was carried out by contributors at Omdena, in collaboration with NYU CIC. A number of locals were employed with the task of systematically collecting Sri Lankan hate speech from various social media platforms. These people were strategically selected from different regions of Sri Lanka, coming from different communities, effectively reducing the bias in the training data and capturing the whole scene of online hate speech.This is a proof-of-concept. The model would be used to further understand how hate speech plays a key role in communal violence, how ML algorithms can be used to perceive and detect hate speech and to fuel further research in the near future.

As a research project, a client had to test the predictability of a random number generator using AI. Various AI models were put to the test. When approaching the task as a time series problem, LSTMs were found to be the most viable candidate, though being off by a very large margin. As the conclusion, it was decided that the particular pseudo random number generator can not be predicted by existing AI models.

Automation DeveloperFreelance Mar 2023 - Aug 2023Colombo, Western Province, Sri LankaEngineered and developed the automation of Excel spreadsheets, macros, functions and pivot tables for HSBC Bank. The solution was programmed with Python through win32 API. A major challenge was accounting for human error as these spreadsheets would often be opened for inspection, as well as the loading times due to the large size of the Excel files.However, these problems were mitigated through offloading certain tasks to certain built-in functions native to Windows OS. I found NumPy vectorization a lifesaver when applying calculations. A lot of data wrangling was involved as well.

Web Scraping EngineerScore Lab Nov 2022 - Apr 2023Colombo, Western Province, Sri LankaWorked on extracting both structured and unstructured data from CyberSec Reports online such as the ones from Palo Alto Networks and CISCO. The problem was to detect human-readable text, instead of all the text in a page's source file. This is where the workflow differed from conventional web scraping and a customized scraping pipeline had to be constructed for each site. This was achieved by testing the semantics of the text.Then the extracted text was parsed into a nested JSON and uploaded to ElasticSearch for further processing. -
