Apprentice Technician To Senior Technical Officer Grade 2

Started as an apprentice technician with Telecom Australia which after a few name changes to reflect mergers with OTC became Telstra we know today.Worked on electromechanical to stored program control exchanges for PSTN switching and worked on copper, coax, and fibre transmission systems. From PDH to SDH to DWDM technologies in transmission together microwave transmission systems using NEC Pasolinks affords me broad knowledge in both transmission and switching.Of particular significance, I was involved with the first optical fibre cable link between Sydney and Melbourne in 1985 as an active member of the Optical Fibre Project Team which was a valuable learning experience as I was the only apprentice on the team. I was treated no differently from my very highly experienced and senior team members. This afforded me to work in a mode that was well ahead of people in the same stage of their careers and which greatly assisted me in rapidly moving up the corporate ladder. Immediately after qualifying as a technician in 1988 I won a position as a Senior Telecommunications Technical Officer Grade 1 and shortly after that another position as a Grade 2.During the latter stages of this period I worked as a materials manager looking after transmission serial/items. On returning to field I elected to move into core network in the mobile services switching centre (MSSC) and was then assigned to the CMTS group to build and expand the analog network (AMPS).
