Insight was an accountancy and consultancy business specialising in small business clients and the audit of freehold block management accounts. Employing 12 staff at the time of business disposal, my role was typical of a small business owner, covering staffing, business generation, financial control, IT and regulation.

Joining DTZ as a graduate surveyor enabled me to experience many surveying disciplines in the context of a multi-national business. Post Assessment of Professional Competency, I worked in the valuation department, principally preparing reports for bank lending purposes and supporting the investment team. This grounding in valuation and worth has underpinned all of my surveying career and enabled me to calculate the financial impact of actions on each project and how this sits with client goals.

After completing officer training at Britannia Royal Naval Collage I undertook flight training at various locations around the UK. During flight training my holdover jobs (when waiting for the next stage of flight training) included Boarding Officer with the Royal Marines, Air Traffic Control (Completed CATCS Shawbury, 2000) and MOD HQ procurement working with armed forces, civil servants and government ministers.

I planned, organised and ran team building and initiative challenge courses for businesses based on my experiences with the Officer Training Corp and at Sandhurst. The course outcomes were focused on business Change Management and Customer Care. I organised corporate attendance at large sporting events and facilitated activities and experiences. This frequently meant orchestrating solutions to last minute issues while maintaining a social façade. This work gave me early exposure to networking at a senior level.
