Many freshwater animals communicate via chemical signals, like alarm cues, sex pheromones, or predator kairomones. Reception of a chemical signal may indicate the presence of a predator or the reproductive status of a potential mate, and usually elicits an appropriate stereotypical behaviour in the receiver. Fish inhabiting environmentally contaminated waters may not receive these chemical cues owing to contaminant-induced lesions to olfactory tissue. I am interested in characterizing this phenomenon in a wide range of species (including both vertebrates and invertebrates) known to inhabit contaminated systems, and demonstrate the extent to which this effect influences aquatic animal populations and ecological structure.
