As a Senior Teaching Assistant, I lead a team of 16 TA’s in The Lighthouse (one of Surrey’s largest Deaf units) which is attached to a mainstream primary school. The students we support range from hearing impaired to profoundly deaf, many of whom also have other complex needs. I organised support staff and children on a daily basis, liaising with all staff, parents and outside agencies in order to provide efficient care and support. I regularly organized and attended meetings with parents, staff and outside agencies, which required forward planning and attention to detail plus clear communication. I kept accurate records and carried out administration and reception duties as well as maintaining resources for the team. As STA I co-ordinated staff training and ensured all training was current and accessible to meet staff needs.

From starting as a shop assistant, I was promoted to the management team. My duties included; complete responsibility of financial control of the shop, including budgets, targets, invoicing and brought ledger control. My role also included planning, organising and implementing presentations, children’s parties, training and supervising all members of staff, liaising with other stores and head office, preparing and organising new promotions and creating staff rotas. Through working at Build-A-Bear-Workshop I have proven my communication skills by having to deal and ensure good customer service while building a strong morale.
