I started at the Jefferson County Attorney's Office in Colorado as a part time employee, mostly assisting the paralegals in a multitude of ways. Most importantly, I would prepare documents to be filed with the court as well as physically performed the filing with the courts on a twice daily basis. After working in this position for a couple of months, I began requesting more duties to help out around the office. Primarily, I troubleshot and solved computer problems so attorneys and other staff did not have sit on the phone with IT whenever something went awry. In addition, I also began preparing files for discovery as well as doing an initial pass for redaction. By the end of the year, a full time paralegal position open and I immediately took advantage of the opportunity. Once in this contracts position, I split my time with the various IT duties and formed a team with the administrator of the document management system, Time Matters. As a member of the Time Matters team, I worked to improve the usability of Time Matters for the entire office which included template enhancements using HotDocs. I thrived in this position for several years but as I got more exposure to contract documents involving county civil engineering project, I realized that something was missing for me. I decided to go back to school in the spring of 2020 to finish my B.S. in Civil Engineering and maintain my full time job at the county. I kept working at the county until May of 2022 when I decided that I needed to get an internship at an engineering firm to get an understanding of this different type of professional world. I started at CTL | Thompson in June of 2022, I performed inspections on residential buildings from the foundation to the finished product before the new homeowner moved in. I enjoyed experiencing the level of detail required to see a project to the end. It shown the spotlight on the many different types of people and trades needed to actually get a house built. For every inspection, I had to read the soil reports and structural plans for the specific project to gain a firm understanding of what the project required. Oftentimes, there were small deviations in the soils report or plans that I had acknowledge before performing the inspection.
