Assisted on a faculty's research project pertaining to a heated raised plant bed constructed from a repurposed solar thermal collector. The purpose of the bin was to extend the growing season for growers in colder climates such as the High Country by allowing them to start seeds earlier and grow later than without a conditioning mechanism.

In this role, I was responsible for general upkeep of the Nexus greenhouse facility as well as for assisting on/leading various projects being done by other members of the research group. Examples of experiences I had include learning about biochar production and usage by assisting a graduate student researcher on his project regarding soil restoration with char, furthering knowledge of solar thermal, hydroponics, and anaerobic digestion technologies, and advancing my knowledge of data logging equipment and data analysis by assisting on the restoration of a HOBO RX3000 system as well as through instrumenting a project I assisted on prior to and throughout the internship. This internship allowed me the flexibility to focus on areas of interest to me and use the opportunity for hands-on experience to my full advantage. I came away with an appreciation of what is necessary to operate a greenhouse in the high country as well as a better understanding of multiple sustainable technologies in real-world applications.
